Supporters of Same Sex Marriage to Hold Vigil Today

Supporters of the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act are invited to join the peaceful vigil from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 17.

McHenry County advocates for same sex marriage are planning to hold a peaceful vigil later today in Woodstock. Members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in McHenry (Tree of Life), along with Parents and Families of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) and Fortunate Families, a Catholic family group, will once again be holding a silent roadside vigil in support of marriage equality in Illinois. Supporters of Same Sex Marriage Hold Vigil in Crystal Lake

Members of Tree of Life-UU Congregation held signs supporting marriage equality.

About 15 people held a peaceful vigil on Friday afternoon in support of marriage equality. The group was comprised of members of Tree of Life-Unitarian Universalist Congregation in McHenry, Fortunate Families (a Catholic group), and Parents and Families of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), according to the Tree of Life Facebook page. Carrying homemade signs advocating same sex marriage, the members stood at the northwest corner of Route 14 and Main Street in Crystal Lake during the evening rush hour. The vigil was the second of its kind for the group; the first was held last month in McHenry.   Marriage equality legislation in Illinois was approved Tuesday by a state Senate committee, advancing the measure toward a vote of the full Senate that is expected to take place on Valentine's Day. The Illinois Senate Executive Committee voted, just as they had a month earlier, in favor of the bill, which would legalize same-sex marriage in the land of Lincoln. Nine committee members voted in favor of the bill and five against. State Sen. Heather Steans, the bill's sponsor, told the committee Tuesday, "Same-sex couples want to marry for the same reasons we all do.
