A winter storm warning has been issued for Tuesday in parts of northern Illinois.
UPDATE, 10:01 a.m. Monday: Much of northern Illinois is now under a winter storm warning from 3 a.m. to midnight Tuesday. The National Weather Service in Chicago says snowfall amounts of 6 to 9 inches can be expected, with locally higher amounts possible. Snowfall rates could reach 1 or 1.5 inches per hour. "This will impact both rush hours on Tuesday, with the higher potential for heavy snowfall during the late afternoon and early evening rush hour," National Weather Service officials said. Tuesday is shaping up to be a messy day in northern Illinois. A winter storm watch is in effect from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening in Boone, Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, Lee and McHenry Counties. The National Weather Service in Chicago says the entire area could see more than 6 inches of snow. The snowfall could be heavy at times, according to the National Weather Service. "Heavy snow and strong east-northeast winds gusting to 40 miles per hour, especially on the lakefront, will reduce visibility and make travel hazardous," National Weather Service officials said their winter weather message Sunday night. How much snow can we expect on Thursday?
Update, 10:30 p.m.: A winter weather advisory is in effect for Lake and McHenry Counties from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The winter storm watch is no longer in effect, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago. The forecast calls for precipitation, including sleet, snow and freezing rain, to fall Wednesday night into Thursday morning. The precipitation is expected to change to all rain once the temperatures reach above freezing, the National Weather Service says. Between 2 and 7 inches of snow and high wind gusts are predicted in McHenry County for Thursday.
Tonight's commute could be problematic for many as Winter Storm Draco bears down on the area. The Chicago Tribune reports the heaviest snow will fall between 3 and 9 p.m. Thursday with wind gusts reaching as high as 50 to 60 mph. McHenry County could see between 3 and 7 inches of with one to two inches expected to fall per hour at the height of the storm, according to the National Weather Service. "The combination of the heavy snowfall rates and very strong winds will result in greatly reduced visibilities and possible blizzard conditions," according to the NWS. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for northern Illinios, including Lake, Cook and McHenry counties, which is in effect until 9 a.m., Friday morning. The rain is expected to change to snow this evening. Snow may fall at rates of as much as one inch per hour, according to the National Weather Service. The wet snow could result in slippery and potentially hazardous roads. Strong winds can result in whipped, heavy snow and reduced visibilities. The National Weather Service warns that the heavy snow could be a health concern when shoveling.
