Huntley Woman Remembered for Her Smile, Her Sweet Personality

Community mourns loss of 19-year-old Jennifer Kearns.

Jennifer Kearns always had a smile on her face. “She was a great girl. You’d never see her without a smile,” said Crystal Sheehan, a family friend who watched the young woman grow up. “Everybody loved to be around her. It made people happy to be near her,” said Sheehan, her voice heavy with sadness. Her sadness reverberated throughout the Huntley community Thursday as family and friends grappled with the 19-year-old’s death in a car accident Wednesday. Kearns was a passenger in a 1995 Jeep Cherokee driven by Zachary C. Richardson, 22, of Union, when it went off the roadway on Marengo Road in Coral Township. Kearns and Richardson were ejected from the vehicle. Kearns was pronounced dead at the scene. Richardson was transported to Woodstock …

Festival of Sugar Maples: Sign of Spring

The McHenry County Conservation District hosts the annual Festival of the Sugar Maples each March at Coral Woods Conservation Area.

The flowing of sap at Coral Woods maple forest is an annual sign of spring in McHenry County. This year, due to the warmer winter temperatures, the sap already is moving, said Wendy Kummerer, communications manager for the McHenry County Conservation District. Longer days – bringing additional sun light – and temperatures reaching the 40-degree mark typical get the sap flowing, she said. “Anytime it goes above 40 degrees in the day, and below freezing at night is good for the sap,” Kummerer said. MCCD workers tapped 50 maple trees on Feb. 17, in preparation of the district’s annual Festival of the Sugar Maples, which is free and open to all ages. The festival is held the first two weekends in March: from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and …

Patch Flash: Quinn to Announce Budget Cuts, Prison Closings

Chicagoland news to talk about: Suburban baseball president suspended for racist comment.

On Wednesday afternoon Governor Pat Quinn will lay out his 2012-2013 budget plan, which reportedly includes closing several state facilities and some cuts to state agencies. Quinn is also expected to propose $2.7 billion in cuts to Medicaid spending. "Everybody in the state is going to be affected by this downsizing of state government,'' Quinn's budget director, David Vaught said. The hardest hit by the cuts, however, will be the Illinois Department of Corrections.  An Oak Lawn youth baseball league board suspended its president during a special meeting on Monday for a racist comment he posted on his personal Facebook page about the late singer Whitney Houston. A suburban Chicago man faces several felony charges after allegedly staying …

And then we have the voters who pony on up to the polls and vote for the Democrats again and again. Will they every learn? No, stupid is as stupid does. Maybe their line of thinking is that if they continue to vote the Dems into office, it will give them something to complain about.   more ›

Burns Calls Out Lauzen for 'Misrepresentation' of Facts

The Kane County Board chairman GOP primary race continues to heat up, as Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns holds a press conference Tuesday, in which he accuses his opponent, state Sen. Chris Lauzen, of manipulating the facts.

Kevin Burns accused Chris Lauzen on Tuesday of "misrepresentation, misuse and misdirection" of facts that make Lauzen "profoundly unqualified to lead" Kane County. The Geneva mayor and Kane County Board chairman candidate held a press conference at noon Tuesday at his campaign headquarters, at 1950 S. Batavia Ave., just north of the Campana Building. The purpose, he said, was to "set the record straight" about statements Lauzen has made during the GOP primary race for County Board chairman. Burns laid out a litany of "misrepresentations" he said are revealing of Lauzen's character. Burns claimed: (1) Lauzen borrowed campaign contributions from his failed 14th District congressional campaign fund to pay for his Kane County campaign, then …

Burns voted to raise your property taxes this year, fortunately others on the City Council managed to hold the line on the City of Geneva tax levy. If you like higher taxes, higher costs of government, misuse of public facilities, road hogging motor coaches sponsored by Windmill Farm special interests, and a make it up as you go along atheist who jokes that congressman Hultgren is wasting his …   more ›

Huntley Fire Station Earns LEED Certification

Station 4 earns kudos for green building.

Huntley Fire Protection District’s new station on Algonquin Road was built to be a model of green building design. The district’s efforts were recently rewarded with a LEED green building certificate. The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) issued the certificate which is the agency’s leading rating system for buildings designed using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in areas of human and environmental health; sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality, according to USGBC’s website. Huntley’s station, the fourth in the district, was designed by Williams Architects and opened last year. It is the first LEED fire station in McHenry County and the first …
