The temperatures may be dropping, but it always feels warm and tropical at Tropical Smoothie Cafe. The hard working employees of Tropical Smoothie decided to donate all of their tips for the entire month of December to Grafton Food Pantry. The owners were so impressed with this generous effort; they agreed to match the funds. Mike and Terri Ward opened Tropical Smoothie Café on Route 47 in Huntley in August 2011. The cafe is known for its healthy food with a tropical twist. Its menu options include a variety of specialty wraps, sandwiches, grilled flat breads, tacos, salads, and soup along with high-quality real-fruit smoothies. It has been almost a year since Tropical Smoothie Café opened. It has been a busy year. Co-owner Terri Ward donned an apron and hat with the Tropical Smoothie Café logo Wednesday, helping customers. The business concept — fresh, healthy smoothies and a varied menu — has been successful. She and her husband, Mike, also have succeeded in creating a business with a hometown feel where they know customers by name and know their orders. Tropical Smoothie Café is one of the businesses participating in Huntley Days, from July 15 to 21. Ward and her family wanted to participate because they feel it is a way to introduce new customers to their café, she said. Tropical Smoothie starts new monthly event, Smoothie Tastings. Customers can try six different flavors for $3.
Tropical Smoothie Café has about 35 kinds of smoothie flavors ranging from simple concoctions like strawberry and banana to Sunrise Sunset, a combination of strawberries, pineapple, mango and orange. Sunrise Sunset is one of Huntley Police Chief John Perkin’s favorite. He popped into the Route 47 café this week to try a new smoothie, one with green tea. Owners Mike and Terry Ward hope other customers start trying new flavors and have come up with a fun way to help them branch out. Tropical Smoothie Café is offering a Smoothie Tasting where customers can try six 3-ounce smoothies for $3 on Saturday, May 5.
