Where Will Police Stop You on St. Patrick's Day? They're Not Telling

No-Refusal Weekend: Kane County State's Attorney Joe Mahon: “I will not say which municipalities will participate. I only will announce when we will have the No-Refusal operation."

Want to know where police will be doing random stops on St. Patrick's Day weekend? You might get a Breathalyzer test, but don't hold your breath waiting for an answer to that one. Kane County law-enforcement agencies will work with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office on a No-Refusal operation during the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day weekend. “This office has a responsibility to prosecute DUI offenders, and to educate the public not to drive when they drink,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said. “As has been our practice, I will not say which municipalities will participate. I only will announce when we will have the No-Refusal operation. “We believe that in past No-Refusal operations, prior publicity has helped to reduce …

You have a right of travel, not a right to drive. If you do not want to obey the law then there are consequences. If you want to fight it get drunk get a dui that way you will have standing standing with the court. But that is a lot of money to find out that you are wrong.   more ›

St. Charles Artilleryman Among Guardsmen Honored

Sycamore event held to applaud promotions, other honors; Santa makes surprise visit.

Holiday spirit was in the air as family and friends watched Illinois Army National Guard artillerymen receive promotions and awards during the unit's holiday dinner at the Sycamore armory Dec. 8. The annual dinner is a chance for Soldiers and their families to celebrate the holiday season and socialize with other families in the unit, and an opportunity for Santa Claus to visit with the children and troops. The battery commander, Capt. Dustin Cammack of Chicago, thanked the families for supporting the Illinois National Guard in 2012. “We asked quite a bit from our soldiers and their families, so I want to say thank you to all of the families for supporting what your soldier does,” said Cammack. “We are a great unit, but we would not be as …

Hultgren Expresses Optimism While in St. Charles

Congressman addresses crowd of about 50 while hosting forum on health care, family finances at Pheason Run Resort.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-14th District, said early Monday he sees reason for optimism about the future in spite of the economic struggles the nation faces. Hultgren spoke only briefly at the start of the “Healthcare and Family Finance Forum” he hosted at at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles. About 50 people attended the event. “Since I’ve been out in Washington, D.C., these last months, the overwhelming issues that I’m hearing back from people is a real concern and uncertainty over the direction of our nation,” Hultgren said. “And tied directly to that is just the affordability of life. I’m hearing from so many people that life is just less affordable than it’s ever been for them — if not in decades, maybe in their lifetime.” Factoring…

Piccadilly Circus Arrives in St. Charles

Circus workers are hard at it now, setting up their tents and other equipment at the Kane County Fairgrounds on St. Charles’ West Side. Twice-daily performances run Wednesday through Friday, with three performances per day on Saturday and Sunday.

It’s a wet, dreary day in St. Charles made all the more miserable if you have to work outdoors. But the crew with Florida-based Piccadilly Circus were undaunted by the rain and hard at work Monday afternoon, beginning to set up the first of their tents after a 200-mile overnight trip. Will, the circus superintendent, said the animals come first, and the day’s first work reflected that. The circus crew was hard at it, preparing to raise the menagerie tent. A semitrailer, with camels peeking through a grated door, served as the backdrop as workers first spread out tarps, then unrolled and laid out the tent itself, followed by tent poles, straps and the stakes that soon would be driven into the ground with a jackhammer mounted on a Bobcat, …

Circuses are banned in many cities. This is abuse and cruelty to animals and whoever pays for those tickets are contributing to the abuse. This is not the dark ages. Educate yourself and learn how those elephants are trained to do those tricks. They support cruelty and abuse. Shame on yourselves.   more ›

Kane's Health Improvement Plan Points to 6 Major Threats to Community Health

Assessment also shows that Kane has the second-youngest population in the Chicago metropolitan area, and the largest proportion of Latino or Hispanic residents of all Illinois counties.

A Kane County health needs assessment has targeted six major threats to the community's overall health. The assessment also reveals that the county has the second-youngest population in the collar counties and the highest proportion of the Hispanic population in the state. At the same time, the fastest growing age group in Kane County is 45-to-64-year-olds, the assessment said. "So, our plan calls on the health system serving Kane residents to focus health improvement efforts across the life span and make sure that services are offered in ways that effectively reach our diverse community," said Paul Kuehnert, executive director of the Kane County Health Department. The Kane County health assessment results pointed to six major threats to …

On the Web: Kane County's Electric Vehicle Standards May Be First In State

Kane County may lead the way in electric vehicle standards in the state and Fermi's Tevatron isn't dead yet.

The Kane County Board will be voting on an ordinance in a few months that will set standards for electric vehicles, making it the first governmental body to do so in Illinois. According to a recent article in The Beacon News, a task force including several industry experts has been meeting to draft the content of the ordinance. Following a presentation expected at the January Committee of the Whole meeting, the ordinance will then go to the full board for approval. The county is planning to build charging stations, according to another good story by Chicago Tribune freelance correspondent Clifford Ward, but it is setting the standards so that private enterprise can jump in. That story has been picked up via Tribune syndication in a lot of …

Patch Poll: Should the State Eliminate the Regional Office of Education?

There are compelling arguments on both sides, but the state's funding issues are creating a number of hard choices. How do you weigh in on the Regional Office of Education?

The funding crunch in the state of Illinois is putting some hard decisions in front of legislators and starting a little bit of a tussle among the local agencies and units of local government that want to get paid by the state. Superintendents and other employees of the ROE haven't been paid since June 30. Yet they continue to come to work. Recently, the Kane County ROE has campaigned to get citizens to lobby on its behalf. Meanwhile, municipalities and schools are seeing fewer state dollars coming in on time—and there has been ongoing discussion about eliminating the local share of statewide revenue sources such as the motor-fuel tax. Representatives of the 47 statewide Regional Offices of Education say ROEs are the most efficient and …

How did the voting result change from over 80% for yes to 20%? The ROE staffs wouldn't try to sway the results would they? Get rid of the unscientific poll but keep the discussion going. Open and honest dialogue is the only way we can solve our problems. Glad to see that no comments bash the other's point of view because certainly we all are entitled to our own opinion.   more ›
