NWS: Roadways Could Be 'Treacherous' Tonight

The National Weather Service predicts wind gusts as high as 35 mph and over eight inches of snow for some areas.

UPDATE 5 P.M. Jan. 12: The McHenry County Sheriff's Department sent out a traffic advisory at 4:39 p.m. Jan. 12 letting people know they should expect their commute to take two to three times longer than normal.  The advisory noted traffic was very heavy on roadways.  ---- UPDATE 4 P.M. Jan. 12 Road conditions are expected to worsen as the afternoon wears on and as many take to the roadways for their evening commute. Police and emergency personnel stayed busy this afternoon with several reports of vehicle run-offs, vehicles spinning out on roadways and crashes in McHenry County, according to police scanner reports. As of 3:30 p.m., roadways in McHenry County as well as counties running south to Naperville and east to Chicago had patches of…

Another February Snow Storm, 75 Years Ago

Huntley Recalls Worst February Snow: 1936.

We’ve had a lot of snow this February. Some say record amounts. But longtime Huntley residents recall a much worse February, that of 1936. The snow began in January, with snowfall after snowfall, each adding to the accumulation already on the ground. Then, in early February, a major blizzard hit the area, bringing the town to a standstill. “That was a wicked storm,” Marion Zarndt recalled.  “It wasn’t all at once, but it was a lot. It just wouldn’t quit.” At the time, Marion was a 14-year-old seventh grader at the Huntley School and was living in town. “They couldn’t plow the streets,” Marion recalled, “because we didn’t have snowplows.” Old photographs of the storm show lines of men digging rural roads out by hand, trying to make an …
