Salvation Army: Donations Down for Red Kettle Campaign, Toy Collections

Officials for the Salvation Army want to remind people to donate to the Red Kettles and other programs, if they are able, as the number of people seeking help in McHenry County continues to climb.

  The Salvation Army on Thursday announced it has fallen behind on its holiday fundraising goal for the 2012 Christmas season. The McHenry County Salvation Army is fighting an uphill battle with the economy, according to Major Garry Lowder, the local commanding officer. "The economy is making this a very challening fundraising campaign," Lowder said. "Many people who gave to us as recent as last year are finding themselves in need of our services this year." The annual Red Kettle Campaign currently is about $25,000 below 2011, and donations of toys, food and gift cards for the Toyland Toyshop also are lower than last year, at this point in time, he said. Salvation Army Readies for Red Kettle, Angel Tree Holiday Programs

The Salvation Army of McHenry County kicks off the Red Kettle Campaign on Friday, Nov. 16. The army's Angel Tree Program has also begun.

  Nothing rings in the holiday season like the familiar sound of a Salvation Army bell chiming through the crisp winter air. The McHenry County chapter of The Salvation Army kicks off its Red Kettle campaign this Friday, Nov. 16. Every year, hundreds of volunteers brave the winter cold, wind and snow to ring bells at red kettles located throughout the county in hopes of reaching the army's holiday fundraising goal. Kettles stand at store fronts in Algonquin, Cary, Crystal Lake, Fox River Grove, Harvard, Huntley, Island Lake, Lake in the Hills, Marengo, McHenry, Wonder Lake and Woodstock.
