Lake in the Hills Teen Named McHenry County Queen

Samantha Bolet, 17, was crowned the 2012 McHenry County Queen at the McHenry County Fair Wednesday night.

Samantha Bolet of Lake in the Hills was crowned the 2012 McHenry County Queen Wednesday night at the McHenry County Fair, according to the Northwest Herald.  The 17-year-old Crystal Lake South High School senior won a $2,000 scholarship and various other prizes, according to the NW Herald. Caitlin Theros, 16, of Crystal Lake, was first runner-up in the competition, according to the NW Herald. Theros as also named Miss Photogenic.

A Loving Memorial at the McHenry County Fairgrounds

Swine barn renovated and dedicated to the memory of three Huntley area teens.

  The Swine Memorial Barn is now the envy of the McHenry County Fairgrounds, standing as a memorial to three young Huntley 4-H Club members, Jennifer Kearns, Kevin Ziller and Grant Fruin. "Some of the kids who show their animals in other counties have told us this is the nicest barn they've seen," Carol Fruin said. "They say it's even nicer than the barns at the Illinois State Fair." The memorial barn project began in April after the Kearns, Ziller and Fruin families, who all live near each other in rural Huntley, began discussing how to spend the memorials each family received in honor of the three. The McHenry County fairgrounds will be busy this week as the county fair kicks off with events for everyone in the family. The 2012 McHenry County Fair runs through Sunday, Aug. 5. Here's some info to help you navigate the fair:   Admission The McHenry County Fair offers affordable family fun. A daily pass is $7 per person, a season pass is $15 dollars. Families Dedicate Memorial Barn at McHenry County Fairgrounds

Dedication for memorial barn honoring Grant Fruin, Kevin Ziller and Jennifer Kearns is planned at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1 at the McHenry County Fairgrounds, 11900 Country Club Road in Woodstock.

  Grant Fruin, Kevin Ziller and Jennifer Kearns were 4-H kids from rural Huntley who spent every summer at the McHenry County Fair. The three childhood friends grew up going back and forth from their families’ farms and were active in the Huntley Pioneer 4-H Club. Each one met with a tragic death. Fifteen-year-old Grant died suddenly in August 2009. Kevin, 21, died in a car accident in July 2010. Earlier this year, Jennifer died in a car accident. She was 19 years old. The close-knit Ziller, Fruin and Kearns families each suffered the loss of a child but turned to each other and the community to memorialize their “little angels.” The families are ready to unveil the renovated livestock barns at the McHenry County Fairgrounds on the first …
