Wind Advisory for Kane, DuPage Counties Until 7 p.m. Sunday

The winds could cause minor property damage. Here's what you need to know.

A wind advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. this Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service. A wind advisory means that sustained winds of 30 to 39 mph or gusts between 45 and 57 mph are likely. The following advisory was released at 2:46 p.m. Sunday: "Southwest winds will continue at 25 to 35 mph with occasional gusts up to 45 mph this afternoon. A cold front will push across the area late this afternoon and early this evening, turning the winds out of the west. As the front passes, there could be a few gusts up to 50 mph for a short period of time. Wind gusts to 50 mph are also possible near thunderstorms. The winds are expected to abate this evening. Update: Tornado Warnings Canceled, Heavy Winds and Rains Linger

Winds gusts and precip stuck around on Sunday. Here's how the tornado scare unfolded.

A tornado scare briefly covered the Tri-Cities on Sunday. Shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for southern Kane County, southeastern DeKalb County, western Kendall County and northeastern LaSalle County. The warning expired at 2:15 p.m. only to be replaced by a 3 p.m. warning for northern DuPage and northwestern Cook counties. The second warning was canceled as the storm weakened and was lowered beneath severe status, according to the National Weather Service. A powerful storm capable of producing a tornado quickly emerged from the west Sunday afternoon. The storm was located near Newark, or 6 miles south of Sandwich, and moved northeast at 45 mph. Kane County Mental Health Advisory Committee for Northern Kane County invites you to join us to learn about the Mental Health Services offered in northern Kane County. An open meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 13, at Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive, Building C. Service providers from northern Kane will provide information about their programs such as: accessing services, eligibility requirements and costs. West Nile Case Brings Kane County Total to 10

One of the cases, the 64-year-old man from Elgin, died in August.

The Kane County Health Department is reporting today one case of West Nile Virus, bringing the total this season to 10. The case being reported today (Oct. 10, 2012) is an 85-year-old Elgin man, who was hospitalized and has since been discharged. The Health Department will be reporting new cases once a week on Wednesdays until the end of the West Nile season, which ends with the first hard frost. Other cases this year include: One of the cases, the 64-year-old man from Elgin, died in August. This summer was hot and dry, the perfect combination for the Culex mosquito, the species that is known to carry the virus. It is likely we will continue to see activity until the season is over. Kane County Farmers Now Eligible for Disaster Aid

USDA gives Lake and McHenry counties primary disaster designations, makes Kane farmers eligible for assistance.

U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, 14th Congressional District, announced Wednesday that Lake and McHenry counties have received primary disaster designations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which also classified Kane County as “contiguous” and eligible for disaster assistance from the Farm Service Agency. A week ago, the USDA gave Lee and Whiteside counties primary disaster designations, and giving contiguous designations to Bureau, DeKalb, Henry and Kendall counties. “This is the worst drought Illinois has seen in more than 50 years,” Hultgren said. “Thankfully, farmers, producers and even other businesses in my district can now apply for assistance to maintain stable operations for the year, despite the extraordinary circumstances.” On …

UPDATE: More Kane County Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile

The total is up to five positive batches of West Nile Virus collected in Kane County traps this year. Here's the latest.

Three more batches (or pools) of mosquitoes collected this week have tested positive for West Nile Virus, the Kane County Health Department reported Friday, July 13. The mosquito batches were collected in Kane County Health Department traps in Aurora, Montgomery and Carpentersville. This brings the total to five positive batches this year, the second in from Carpentersville. These positive mosquito batches usually are the first indicators of West Nile activity. "With this year’s hot, dry weather, these results come as no surprise," the Kane County Health Department press release said. Illinois Tea Party Backs Lauzen for Kane Co. Chairman

The group says they based its decision on Lauzen's previous performance.

State Sen. Chris Lauzen has won the backing of the Illinois Tea Party in his bid for Kane County Board Chairman. In a statement released Thursday, the Illinois group said Lauzen has shown the "Tea Party ethics of fiscal responsibility, limited government and promoting free markets." Lauzen is running against Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns for the Republican nomination. The winner in the GOP's March 20 primary will go one to face one of two Democrats, former St. Charles Mayor Sue Klinkhamer or past Carpentersville Mayor Bill Sarto, who also are vying for their party's nomination.
