Huntley Police Chief John Perkins releases findings of a survey the police department conducted this summer.
Huntley police received hundreds of comments in a survey conducted this summer and learned residents want to know what crimes are occurring in their neighborhoods, Huntley Police Chief John Perkins said. More than 800 Huntley residents responded to the survey seeking input on everything from the type of service police are providing to whether or not people feel safe walking in their neighborhood. “What stuck out is residents want current information on crimes,” Perkins told the village board Thursday night. Perkins wants to start providing crime mapping to residents where reports would be listed on a map of Huntley then residents could click on an icon to learn more about the report. It is a project the police department will be working …

What started as a conversation two years ago about creating a community radio station in Huntley became a reality Thursday when Huntley Community Radio began broadcasting over the web. “We are a long way from that first conversation,” Jim Carollo said as he stood in the Huntley Community Radio (HCR) studio with Executive Director Allen Pollack. “It feels good.” HCR had a soft launch last month, doing audio streaming from a temporary location through several providers, Pollack said. Thursday, HCR began streaming from its studio located in a building at Deicke Park. The Huntley Park District leases the space to the nonprofit radio station. “It should be seamless,” Pollack said. The station can be heard on HCR's website or at this link. The…

Joe Buedel loves scaring people. He gets a kick out of turning his Huntley home into an extreme haunted house every Halloween, building his own props and coming up with new ideas to scare the crowds that gather in his neighborhood every year. Last year, Holiday Habits _ the name of his “haunt” _ drew 4,000 people to view the countless skeletons, tombstones and creepy scenes at his house. He started years ago with a single Halloween decoration _ a creepy butler prop who became known as “Grampa James” _ when he bought his first home. The prop now sits in the basement of his Huntley home, which is his workshop. Buedel is a member of the Chicago Haunt Builders, a group of homeowners who decorate their homes and work on ideas throughout the …

Residents say timing of lights at Freeman Road and Dahmer Drive frustrating.
Mike McCoy is the construction manager for the Route 47 interchange project and he knows the frustration drivers face when waiting for the traffic light at Freeman Road and Dahmer Drive. Unfortunately, it’s not something he has much control over it. What has happened is one lane across the Route 47 bridge has been eliminated causing backups during rush hour, 3 to 6 p.m., said McCoy, a manager with Omega Constructions Engineers. Construction crews found the backup were extending from Route 47 onto the Jane Adams Memorial Tollway (I-90). One day, traffic in the westbound lanes on I-90 were backed up all the way to the Elgin exits, McCoy said. “We had to change the signal times because it was a very dangerous situation,” he said. The result…

Construction moving along as Tollway officials expect full interchange to be operational in a year.
Kathy Wojciechowski sat through a presentation by Illinois Tollway officials Monday then a question and answer session where people commented on everything from noise walls to the cost of tolls. As she left the Drendel Ballroom in Sun City Huntley, Wojcichowski stopped to talk to Huntley Mayor Chuck Sass. “We are thrilled this is happening,” she said. Wojciechowski is hoping the interchange will bring more business to Huntley. “It’s going to be tremendous for us,” she said. Illinois Tollway held an open house to answer the public’s question about the $69 million Route 47 interchange project Monday at Sun City Huntley. The Route 47 full interchange project is monumental not just for Huntley, it signifies the start of the Illinois Tollway’…

Rhonda, this is mostly true. However, with the Neighborhood Watch program in place, people being aware of what is going on, not turning a blind eye and assuming someone else will call in suspicious activies is not going to reduce the crime rate. You have to be diligent and make it your responsibility to keep your home safe.   more ›
