High school recognizing young men and women who've enlisted and will be joining the military after graduation.
Daniel Diaz de Leon walked down Huntley’s Main Street in sync with his fellow U.S. Marine Corp recruits at the village’s Memorial Day parade. Diaz de Leon is one of seven of Huntley High School’s class of 2012 who are entering the Marine Corps after graduation. The group marched with Sun City Marines and Marine recruiter Sgt. Lawrence Prete. “When we were marching, I heard one of them say this is one of the proudest moments of their lives,” said Prete, whose assignment includes visiting Huntley High School monthly. Domestic violence experts to speak at Sun City on Tuesday, June 5.
Michelle Mathieu’s beating death had a profound effect on the Sun City Huntley community, inspiring her neighbors to take a stand against domestic violence. “There were a lot of people really shaken about it,” Catherine Portera said of the Mathieu murder. Mathieu was found beaten March 18 in the bedroom of the Rock Springs Lane home she rented with her boyfriend, Robert Signorile. She died March 24. Signorile is being held in the McHenry County Jail, charged with her murder. Sun City’s Neighborhood Advisory Council/Neighbors Helping Neighbors decided to hold a presentation on domestic violence from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, for Sun City residents, Portera said. Huntley parade draws hundreds of people to Main Street for parade, Memorial Day ceremony Monday.
Master of ceremonies proud to see crowds.
American Legion Post 673 Adjunct Herb Glissendorf has been the master of ceremonies of the organization’s Memorial Day ceremony for more than 20 years. As he looked around the downtown square Monday, he said he was proud to see Huntley residents come out for the Memorial Day parade and ceremony. “It’s exceptional here in Huntley,” he said of the turnout. Glissendorf was one of the dignitaries who spoke during a ceremony after the Memorial Day parade. The ceremony included a color guard, the Huntley High School marching band and the laying of a memorial wreath. “Memorial Day is not about picnics and parades.
