The Huntley High School boys track team placed second overall with 56 points at the Huntley boys sectional track and field meet on Friday, May 17. Grant Community High School came in first place with 83 points, according to preliminary results posted on the IHSA website. Crystal Lake Central placed fifth overall with 49 points. Huntley High School placed third overall at the sectional meet in Belvidere last week.
Several local girls track and field athletes will be headed to the state meet at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston this Thursday through Saturday. The Huntley High School girls track team placed third overall at the Belvidere (North) girls sectional track and field meet on May 9 with 59 points. Rockton Hononegah came in first place with 85 points while Cary-Grove High School came in second place with 75 points, according to preliminary results posted on the IHSA website. A 2011 survey by Babson Survey Research Group found that nearly 23 percent of students in Illinois took blended learning classes, according to the Northwest Herald.
"Blended learning," a combination of online learning with traditional classroom instruction, is taking hold at Huntley High School with 500 of the high school's 2,393 students enrolled in the program this year and 1,300 students expected to enroll next year, according to the Northwest Herald. The blended learning classes were offered for the first time this year and allow students to complete online assignments while attending 47-minute classes at least two times per week, according to the Northwest Herald. The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.

While Huntley High School was not included in rankings recently released by Newsweek of the best high schools in the country, two area high schools did make the list. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the United States and about 2,500 schools responded in 2013. Cary-Grove High School was ranked as the 733rd best high school in the country while Prairie Ridge High School was ranked as the 767th best high school in the United States. The construction project is expected to get underway in early June, according to the Northwest Herald.
As part of the first project in an extensive expansion, construction will soon start on the Huntley High School's football stadium, according to the Northwest Herald. The District 158 Board of Education last week approved $1.4 million in construction bids for work, such as, "excavation of the football field and installation of drainage equipment" in preparation for the addition of a new synthetic field, according to the article.

Huntley High School senior Marek Makowski has been named Illinois Journalist of the Year by the Illinois Journalism Education Association (IJEA). On April 27, he will travel to San Francisco with journalism adviser Dennis Brown for the Journalism Education Association spring conference where he will be in the running for National Journalist of the Year. “I couldn’t believe it when Mr. Brown told me the great news,” said Makowski. For the competition, Makowski submitted a 38-page portfolio, which was the culmination of three years of his dedication to writing. The project will cost around $20 million more than originally expected, according to the Northwest Herald.
The District 158 School Board learned last week that a Huntley High School expansion project could cost between $30 million and $36 million instead of the $12 million total that was originally expected, according to the Northwest Herald. The board members are expected to discuss at a Thursday meeting how to come up with the extra money to finance the project, which is meant "to accommodate 3,000 students by 2019," according to the Northwest Herald.

This seems to be typical of the district 158 board. Two years ago they screwed with our tax rates. Now this "miscalculation". Total BS. I as a Sun City resident will protest strong with other residents any attempt to raise our taxes for schools to pay for this. Residents are already talking to the Sun City Board members to see what they can and will do about this.   more ›
