Is There a Dole Mansion Ghost?

Visions of ladies dressed in Victorian-era clothes, unexplained laughing and talking, lightbulbs exploding, and surprising photographs. Proof of paranormal activity, or just folklore?

Ghosts. Spirits. Paranormal activity. Either you believe in them, or you don't. But since it's the day before Halloween, it seemed appropriate to delve into a bit of ghostly folklore as it pertains to one of Crystal Lake's oldest landmarks - the Dole Mansion. Most people have probably driven by the old house by the lake, built in the 1860s by Charles Sidney Dole. The mansion and its addition at 401 Country Club Road are now part of the Lakeside Legacy Arts Park. Thousands of people visit the Dole grounds every summer during the Lakeside Festival, or the 4th of July celebrations. But, according to some tales, there are just as many spectacular and bewildering things happening inside the Dole, as well.  Spirit Sightings?  "Once when I was …

Sex Offender List: Know What Homes to Avoid on Halloween in Huntley

A map of registered sex offenders living in Huntley.

Patch wants to help Huntley parents keep their kids safe this Halloween. As your little ones and not-so-little-ones prepare to go door to door for trick-or-treating this Halloween, Patch offers a map of our town's registered sex offenders. Genearlly, sex offender laws center on offenders registering in person each year at the local police department. They must do so for a required 10-year registration period, unless they are separately required to register for life. Offenders are prohibited from living within 500 feet of a school, daycare center, youth center or other facility that caters to children younger than 18 years old. A search of the Illinois Sex Offender Registry shows 11 registered sexual predators residing in Huntley.  The …

Patch Picks the Top 10 Scariest Halloween Movies of All Time

Do you love scary movies? Which ones do you think are the best picks for a Halloween fright fest?

Here it is. Halloween season. My favorite time of year.  I love it more than Christmas, Thanksgiving and any other notable holiday. Maybe that's weird, but whatever. Those holidays are great, too, don't get me wrong. There's just something about Halloween that I love. It's 50 percent because of my love of candy, and the ability to justify mass consumption of it at this time of year, and the ready availability of horror movies, haunted houses and such. I love that have-to-sleep-with-the-lights-on kind of scared I get because of a good horror movie. Note: I wrote good horror movie. In the spirit of this, the best and spookiest of all seasons, here is my countdown of the 10 scariest movies of all time: 10. Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) – …

Cemeteries: Creepy or Cool?

I've visited many cemeteries in Illinois, Wisconsin and even Florida. What about you?

I have a confession to make. I love going to cemeteries. Is that weird? I know some of you are probably thinking that cemeteries are too creepy. I know I've definitely been to some creepy cemeteries. But they're also interesting historically and architecturally. Take, for example, Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. Take a driving or walking tour around the cemetery and you'll see some big names. Marshall Field. George Pullman. Louis Sullivan. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The monuments are just as big. One of the most famous is a statue of a cloaked figure at the burial site of Dexter Graves. It's pretty amazing! But, of course, I do often visit these cemeteries for their legends and (alleged) hauntings. One of the coolest I've been to is Rosehill…

Outdoor Halloween Decorations, Fall Planters

Decorating for fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving is a growing trend. Here are some decorating ideas found on door steps in Crystal Lake and Algonquin.

Decorative planters on door steps and front lawns provide an opportunity for avid gardeners to extend the growing season.  Some people, who just like sprucing up their stoops for the holiday season, opt for artificial decor. Either way, the blossoms of red, orange, green and brown add a colorful flair for fall.

These are great holiday decorations! I love the use of the fall colors and ornamental grasses to make these spaces autumnal, but still full of "growth" and "life"! I would hang a red or yellow wind chime from one of these front porches' overhangs, to add a little element of sound and movement as well!   more ›
