Volunteers Help Grafton Food Pantry Reach for New Heights

Food drive and donation of other “wish list” items help Grafton Food Pantry serve families.

Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venturing Crews of Huntley and Lake in the Hills will be going door to door in your neighborhood collecting food for the Grafton Food Pantry. “At this time of year, donations are down, yet the demand continues to be high. It is a wonderful opportunity for members of the Scout troops/packs and their families to tour the pantry and contribute to helping to feed their neighbors and friends that are in need,” Grafton Food Pantry Board Member Harriet Ford said. Expect to see a smiling Scout at your door between the hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  No time to shop for those extra items? No problem, monetary donations (checks should be made out to Grafton Food Pantry) will also be accepted. “The Scout organization’s Annual …

HHS Football Team Scores Big for Grafton Food Pantry

Team makes “The Holiday Promise” and donates 200 gifts for food pantry’s clients.

Members of the Huntley High School's football team are winners in every aspect of the word to Grafton Food Pantry. The team had a game plan to make the holidays bright for neighborhood children facing a holiday with very little to cheer about. Each member of the football program and their families participated. This effort resulted in delivery of over 200 gifts for boys and girls from age 0-18 whose parents are clients of Grafton Food Pantry. “'The Promise' is one of the team’s mottos which states that the team will not only give their all to each other, but also promise to give back to their community,” Kathy Schneiter, President of Grafton Food Pantry said. Not only did the team members _ under the leadership of Head Coach John Hart, …

New Location Means Lots to do for Grafton Food Pantry

Food pantry readies for move, seeks donations and items to use at its new home.

Grafton Food Pantry board member Harriet Ford has had a busy few months and it’s about to get even more hectic. In August, the food pantry was notified that the building it currently leases in a Huntley was sold and it would have to move. The pantry spent the last few months searching for a new location. A deal came through over the weekend. Grafton Food Pantry’s new address will be 11481 Allison Court, Huntley. The phone number is 847-495-0922. “We’ve been looking for a couple of months, it finally happened,” Ford said. “Now we’ve got a lot to do in a short period of time.” The pantry hopes to be in its new location by mid-November. Right now, “we are in the cleaning and planning stage,” she said. “We are just so excited about the fact …

Patch Flash: North Suburban Food Pantry Sees Increase in Middle Class Users

Chicagoland news to talk about: High school football coaches accused of hazing freshman.

Residents that have been classically defined as solidly suburban middle class are the biggest group of new users at the Niles Township Food Pantry. The long-term unemployed or those forced to take lower-wage positions after being cast out of well-paying jobs, or have lost homes to foreclosure, have dramatically swelled the ranks of pantry patrons with the  peak demand for food necessities still ahead December. Last year 150 students attending Township High School District 211 schools in Palatine were classified as homeless, and this year that number continues to rise.  In response to the growing problem, a group called Realtors Against Homelessness (R.A.H.) have joined forces with the District 211 Foundation to sponsor an upcoming …

Patch Flash: Law Change Makes it Legal to Swear on Streets in Park Ridge

Chicagoland news to talk about: Cook County defies White House, releases illegal immigrants charged with felonies.

No more holding back on the expletives when visiting Park Ridge. Park Ridge residents will now be able to swear, legally, thanks to a local law being stripped from the books. The Park Ridge City Council decided this week to delete a law which made it a crime "to use profanity in any street, alley or public place of the City.” The release of more than 40 suspected illegal immigrants jailed in Cook County on felonies has added fuel to a contentious debate over public safety and local authorities' defiance of a White House program that aims to pursue more criminal deportations. The program depends on police and sheriff's deputies to hold suspected illegal immigrants who get arrested beyond the time when they would otherwise be released. But …

Grafton Food Pantry Reaches Out Online

Food pantry launches website to help people in need.

Grafton Food Pantry now has a website it hopes will reach those who need help and generate more support for its mission of feeding local families. The food pantry launched the site, www.graftonfoodpantry.org, Monday with the help of Huntley resident Chrissy Hoover. "We are excited, it's just a way to get the current information out there," said John Rossi, who founded the food pantry. "Our mission is to let people be aware of the pantry and the services we provide. It was important to get out our message so the website was perfect." Hoover, who moved to Huntley in June, did not know much about the food pantry but heard the nonprofit needed a website. She decided to create one as part of a school project. She is studying management online …
