The Huntley girls basketball team lost their point guard, Carly Goede, to injury in weekend game.
HOFFMAN ESTATES – Few moments during a basketball season prove capable of altering a team’s season, but the Huntley girls basketball had one of those moments late in the third quarter of their 60-56 loss to Hoffman Estates Saturday. With the Red Raiders hanging on to a narrow one-point lead, Kadie Lowery fired a field goal attempt that missed its mark. Lowery fought the Hawks’ Destinee Young for the rebound before it squirted towards half-court. Several players ran towards the ball, including Carly Goede, who bent over to try to pick it up. At the same time, Young and several other players dove for the loose ball and, at the point of impact, the Huntley point guard’s leg caught underneath the pile in a frightening – and potentially season-…

After a touching moment between mother and son, the Huntley boys basketball team defeated Dundee-Crown 48-34.
Tyler Brunschon has logged hundreds of hours on a basketball court, but it will be difficult for Brunschon to point to a more overwhelmingly pure moment on the court than the ceremony at half court which preceded Huntley’s 48-34 win over Dundee-Crown. With the majority of the Huntley crowd donning pink, the entire Huntley boys basketball program formed a line before Wednesday night’s game and, one-by-one, gave a hug and a pink rose to Tyler Brunschon’s mother Robin, 48, who is battling breast cancer. After over 20 hugs and pink roses, “Tyler Brunschon” was the final named announced over the loudspeaker. And as mother and son hugged at mid-court, the gym filled with applause, the crowd showing its support of the Brunschon family while also …

This article reviews the last week of the Huntley sports scenes and looks ahead.
Huntley’s Dylan Neukirch returned for the Jacobs Tournament, in which Huntley finished an impressive second to a strong Barrington team, but I only saw him play for the first time on Tuesday night against Crystal Lake South. What stands out to me about Neukirch’s addition to an already strong and guard-oriented Huntley team is the match-ups it creates for opponents. Neukirch’s offensive game is somewhat similar to senior Tyler Brunschon’s. Both players are quality ball handlers who can knock down the three and drive past defenders. If you’re counting, that gives Huntley four players in their starting lineup – Justin Frederick and Troy Miller are the third and fourth – capable of easily scoring 15 points in a game simply by knocking down …

Dundee-Crown, behind a bevy of quality matches and three forfeit victories, defeated Huntley 58-18 Thursday night.
As the Huntley and Dundee-Crown wrestling teams warmed up before Thursday night’s dual meet, the Red Raiders incurred something they’ve been burdened with all season long; an 18-point deficit. Because of a decrease in numbers and an academic suspension, Huntley was forced to forfeit three matches to the Chargers. It was a particularly difficult deficit because Huntley was only able to win three matches -- all by pin fall -- against Dundee-Crown. Huntley was blown out Thursday evening 58-18, falling to a far more experienced Dundee-Crown squad despite quality efforts from the Red Raiders’ best wrestlers. “We know going in that we have to get more points and not give up big points,” Huntley co-coach Kevin Summerville said. “We’re going down …

The Huntley girls bowling team dropped a tight match on Monday to Elgin, 2340-2276, 3-1.
HUNTLEY – It’s readily apparent, to everyone involved with the Huntley girls bowling team that Amy Antczak is the team’s best bowler. Antczak regularly eclipses 200 in Huntley’s meets and, on Monday afternoon in the Red Raiders’ non-conference meet with Elgin, Antczak bowled a 652 series (225, 215, 212), which was her best of the season. But the best series of the year from the Red Raiders’ best bowler wasn’t enough for Huntley in their attempt to top Elgin, as the Red Raiders largely struggled to match their season averages in Elgin’s 2340-2276, 3-1 victory at Bowl-Hi Lanes. “I am (disappointed). There were a couple games that should have been higher,” said Huntley coach Sandra Spear, who was left searching for the reason why her team …

The Huntley boys basketball team picked up their first loss of the season Tuesday evening against Fremd, 56-46.
One of the perils of having a young basketball team is that sometimes players fail to stick to the game plan established coming in. There's no denying the amount of young talent on the Huntley boys basketball team this season, but the Red Raiders couldn't get by on talent alone Tuesday night in Palatine against a skilled and experienced Fremd squad led by three-point sharpshooter Zach Monaghan. The game plan against Monaghan, who has signed a scholarship to play at South Dakota State next year, was to provide constant help, especially off screens, in the attempt the dead-eye shooter from getting open looks at the basket from behind the arc. The Red Raiders failed to do that in the first half, as Monaghan made five three pointers in the …

This is the first installment of a new weekly column exclusive to Huntley Patch. In this column, we will look back on some of the events and outstanding performances that occurred this week and forward to next week's games.
One month into the season, both Huntley's girls' and boys' basketball teams have been forced to battle their share of injuries. The girls -- now 5-3 on the season after Saturday's near comeback against Mundelein -- have played without leading scorer Kadie Lowery for the past two games and will most likely be without her on Tuesday against an 0-9 Jacobs squad. Huntley girls coach Steve Raethz said Lowery would hopefully return by the end of this current week, but wasn't completely sure. The injury to her left ankle isn't terribly serious, but the focus at this point is getting her back to 100 percent for the meat of the Fox Valley Conference season. The 5-0 Huntley boys squad lost guard/forward combo guard Dylan Neukirch to a broken hand …

The Huntley girls basketball team trailed by 10 points at halftime against Mundelein, but could not complete the comeback, falling 46-44 on Saturday.
MUNDELEIN – Similarly to Tuesday night's game against Barrington, the Huntley girls basketball team found themselves trailing by double figures at halftime in Saturday's opening-round game of the Mundelein Tournament against the host Mustangs. But on Saturday afternoon, the Red Raiders offered a much different response than they did on Tuesday. Sparked by 11 points and six steals in the second half by guard Meagan Flynn, Huntley stormed back from an 11-point third quarter deficit to cut the lead to four at the end of the third. A long two-point jump shot by Brianna Roeser would give the Red Raiders a 41-39 lead with three minutes remaining but, from there, Mundelein would score the next six points and hold on to win 46-44. "In the second …

Behind a balanced scoring attack, Huntley knocked off the SkyHawks 73-54 Friday night.
After an eight-day layoff and with a tough non-conference game against Fremd looming next Tuesday, it would have been easy for the Huntley boys basketball team to overlook a 1-5 Johnsburg team who fell in their most recent game 48-21 to Dundee-Crown. But that wasn't the case for the Red Raiders Friday night, as a balanced offensive attack dismissed their Fox Valley Conference Fox Division competition, 73-54. Huntley was led in scoring by Justin Frederick (19 points), while Tyler Brunschon added 16 and junior Troy Miller tallied 15 points. The majority of Frederick's scoring output – 15 points, specifically – came in the first half as Huntley took a 35-27 lead into the break before committing to working the ball inside and pulling away. "…

The Huntley boys swim team, whose season is just two and a half weeks old, took fifth out of nine teams at Wednesday's St. Viator Invitational.
The Huntley boys swim team had swam for six days in a row – beginning with last Friday's meet against Illinois Math and Science Academy, the program's first-ever meet – heading into the St. Viator Invitational, but that didn't hold back the upstart Red Raiders Wednesday evening. The Huntley swim team finished Wednesday's Invitational with 59.5 points, an amount which placed them in fifth place out of nine teams. St. Ignatius won the meet with 184 points and St. Viator placed fourth with 79 points. Huntley received several quality swims at St. Viator, including three individual top-six finishes. Junior Jakub Petyniak placed in the top six in both of his individual events, finishing fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (24.21) and fifth in the …
