Join the 22nd Judicial Circuit Family Violence Coordinating Council for a Candlelight Vigil at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3 on the Woodstock Square in downtown Woodstock. The vigil will be held in rain or shine. The candlelight vigil theme is “If Even a Single Family Suffers It’s Too Many” and is in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Entertainment will feature guitarist and singer Julie Gibson. Anyone is welcome to show their support of domestic violence awareness efforts in McHenry County. The purpose of the event is to remember those who have been hurt by domestic abuse, including survivors and family members and to boost awareness of the devastation that domestic abuse can cause individuals, their families, and friends. Residents learn about statistics, share stories and reach out to help victims.
The woman sat in the back row in brown crop pants, a white top, dangling earrings and sandals quietly listening to Huntley Sgt. Linda Hooten outline the signs of domestic violence. Later, during a question and answer portion of Hooten’s presentation at Sun City Huntley last week, the woman stood up to share her own story. Verbal abuse is just as bad as physical abuse, the woman said, adding she was in a relationship for with a man who was extremely verbally abusive. “He made me feel like I wasn’t anything,” the woman said. She got out of the relationship six years ago. “You are absolutely right,” Hooten said, about the impact of verbal abuse. “It’s hard for people on the outside to see that. Huntley police, experts tell people how to help, how to determine if you are in an abusive relationship.
Huntley police have seen a 25 percent decrease in domestic violence calls from January to April of this year yet the department had a domestic violence homicide _ the first murder in three years _ during the same period. It was Michelle Mathieu’s violent death _ described as heinous by authorities_ that brought domestic violence experts and about 60 people to Sun City’s Drendel ballroom Tuesday night to talk about the topic and learn about the cycle of domestic violence. “We had a terrible tragic domestic incident in our community, we felt something needed to be done so Michelle’s death didn’t go in vain,” said Karen Kennedy, president of the Neighbors Advisory Council for Sun City.
