1,000 People Expected to Walk for March of Dimes in Crystal Lake on Sunday

McHenry County March for Babies starts at 9 a.m. Sunday at McHenry County College.

About 1,000 people are expected to gather at McHenry County College on Sunday for the McHenry County March for Dimes to Help Save Babies walk. Registration for the walk is at 8 a.m. at MCC, 8900 Route 14, in Crystal Lake. The 3.1-mile walk kicks off at 9 a.m. The Koenen Family of Crystal Lake will serve as McHenry County's March for Babies Ambassador Family in remembrance of their daughter Melinda, said Rowena Roxas, media spokesperson for March of Dimes. Melinda Koenen was born at 27 weeks gestation in August 2009 and fought every day of her life. She survived nearly seven months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, but was ultimately too sick and frail. She lives on through her family and the foundation they started in her memory, Roxas …

Area Man Faces Child Porn Charge

Torian L. Rodez, 23, is being held on a $25,000 bond.

A 23-year-old Crystal Lake man faces a child pornography charge after local investigators say they found images of sexual abuse of children on his home computer, according to a McHenry County Sheriff's Office press release.  Torian L. Rodez, 23, of 1336 Skyridge Drive, Apt. A in Crystal Lake, has been charged with child pornography, which a class three felony, and is being held on a $25,000 bond, according to the news release. Rodez was arrested after police conducted a search of his home.  Sheriff's office investigators along with the Crystal Lake Police Department worked together since early April 2013 when police say they discovered Rodez had been downloading the child porn, according to the news release.  Rodez is next expected in …

Three Injured in Crash on Route 176 Near Crystal Lake

The crash occurred around 7 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to the Northwest Herald.

Three women were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries following a three-car crash Tuesday morning on Route 176 by the Snap-On Tools near Crystal Lake, according to the Northwest Herald.  A fourth woman was treated and released at the scene of the crash, according to the article.  Read more on the Northwest Herald website.

A Look at Suburban Metra Stops, Income Levels

On the northwest line, the Barrington stop had the highest income level, according to Crain's.

A look at income levels in suburban towns with Metra stops provides a glimpse at the disparity in wealth throughout the area, according to an interactive map posted on Crain's Chicago Business Journal.  Among all Chicago and suburban Metra stops, nearby Woodstock ranked as the 122nd highest average income $64,284 while Cary ranked as the 40th highest income with an average income of $98,454 and Crystal Lake ranked as the 78th highest income at $78,488, according to Crain's. On the northwest line, the Barrington stop had the highest income level, ranking as the 17th highest income at $120,880. Warriors Watch Riders Honor U.S. Army SPC Franklin McAnally Jr. of Crystal Lake

U.S. Army Spc. Franklin McAnally, Jr., is home for a two weeks leave from Afghanistan.

U.S. Army Spc. Franklin McAnally, Jr., of Crystal Lake, was on his way home Saturday, May 4, to enjoy a two-week leave with his family from deployment in Afghanistan. When he arrived near the border of Crystal Lake and Lake in the Hills, he was met by 43 members of the Warriors Watch Riders as well as fire and police officers from Crystal Lake, Algonquin and Lake in the Hills. The Warriors and officers welcomed home McAnally, Jr., in "WWR" style and escorted McAnally to a celebratory dinner. Traffic along Randall was slowed for a time as police and fire vehicles sound horns and flashed lights. Crystal Lake Man Faces Federal Charges in 'Secret Shopper' Scheme

Michael S. Mackay, 46, has been charged with allegedly sending out more than $1 million in counterfeit money orders.

Crystal Lake resident Michael S. Mackay, 46, has been charged with two federal counts of mail fraud for his role in a 'secret shopper' scam that ran from Sept. 2011 through May 16, 2012, the Northwest Herald reports. Mackay allegedly sent out more than $1 million in counterfeit money orders that looked like those issued by the U.S. Postal Service, American Express, Capital One Bank, National Bank of Texas, First National Bank and Navy Federal Credit Union, the story said. Recipients were asked to deposit the money orders, ranging from $900 to $2,000, at their banks, and then go to a Western Union site to wire a certain percentage back. Mackay received at least $10,000 from at least 665 victims across the U.S., the Northwest Herald reports.

Crystal Lake Blaze Remains Under Investigation

Fire officials tell the Northwest Herald that most of the homes had cedar shake roofs, which can be more combustible.

While a blaze that damaged five homes on Carrington Drive in Crystal Lake last week remains under investigation, fire officials told the Northwest Herald most of the homes had cedar shake roofs, which have shingles that can be combustible, that burned.  The home where the fire originated at 3217 Carrington Drive on May 1 was destroyed by the blaze and one of the homes the blaze spread to at 3222 Carrington Drive was uninhabitable. Three other homes were damaged by the fire.  While cedar shake shingles are good for running water off a roof, a few years in the sun can mean the shingles "are more at risk for burning easily," Crystal Lake Deputy Chief Paul DeRaedt told the Northwest Herald. It's First Friday: Stop by To See District 47 Artwork, Enjoy Live Music

Stop by the Dole Mansion and Lakeside Legacy Arts Park today from 5 to 8 p.m. to see artwork made by District 47 and Creative Artistry School of Fine Arts students.

Today is First Friday at Lakeside Legacy Foundation at the Historic Dole Mansion in Crystal Lake. The public is welcome to attend this free, family-friendly event from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Dole, 401 Country Club Rd., Crystal Lake. Tonight's event will feature art works made by District 47 students and students from Creative Artistry School of Fine Arts. The McHenry County Youth Orchestra and District 47 students will provide the live music for tonight's gathering. Photos of Houses Damaged in Crystal Lake Fires; Authorities Search for Cause

Investigators were at 3217 Carrington Drive on the east side of Crystal Lake on Thursday trying to determine the cause of the house fire, which spread to four other nearby homes.

Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department has released the status of the five homes involved in the Wednesday afternoon fires on Carrington Drive. The house located at 3217 Carrington Dr., where the fire originally started at about 3:30 p.m. May 1, was characterized as a "total loss," Battalion Chief Jerry Larsen said. The house burned to the ground, and only the home's front brick facade and chimney remained standing. Authorities believe the high winds may have blown embers from 3217 Carrington to houses directly across the street, where four other houses caught fire as well. The two-story residence at 3222 Carrington Dr. sustained the worst of the damage for the neighboring houses. Fire ate through the cedar shake roofing and extended to the …
