My take on what is going on with our local teams.
We are now at the 2/3 point of the prep football season, here's my thoughts on the local teams after Week 6 and going into Week 7. Jacobs: The Golden Eagles started slow but came away with a 48-19 win over Huntley to improve to 6-0 and officially qualified for the playoffs. It will be the first time Jacobs has qualified for the playoffs in back-to-back years since 1998 and 1999. It was another strong night for the Jacobs running game as Caz Zyks went over 100 yards rushing and Kyle Wright scored three touchdowns. Jacobs rolled up over 450 yards of offense and now the schedule gets much tougher with undefeated Prairie Ridge coming to Algonquin Friday night. Prairie Ridge gave up their first points in four weeks in their Week 6 win. This …

My take on what our local teams are doing after their fifth games of the year
Here’s my look at the local prep football teams after their Week 5 games… Jacobs: The Golden Eagles improved to 5-0 with a 28-20 Homecoming win over Cary-Grove for their first win over the Trojans since 2001. This is the first time in anyone’s memory that Jacobs has started this strongly. It is a whole new attitude at Jacobs with Bill Mitz now in his second year at the helm. Mitz brought a winning tradition from Stevenson High School and has changed the whole culture of what Jacobs football is. Friday night, Mitz even threw in some shotgun formations where he said after the game, he had never done in his coaching career before. Jason Judson threw for 137 yards including a game-altering 66-yard touchdown to Jake Gierlak nine seconds after …

Golden Eagles defeat Cary-Grove for first time since 2001 with 28-20 win.
It had been a long time since the Jacobs football program had defeated Cary-Grove. In fact, it had been since 2001 that the Golden Eagles had come away with a win over the Trojans. Friday night, Jacobs got another chance on Homecoming night and the Golden Eagles didn't let the chance slip away as Jason Judson had three touchdowns including one with two minutes to go to give Jacobs a 28-20 win to remain undefeated on the season at 5-0 and 2-0 in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division. The Trojans (3-2, 0-2 FVC Valley) got on the scoreboard first a little over three minutes into the game on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Quinn Baker. Jacobs responded later in the quarter on a 18-yard touchdown pass from Judson to Evan Bishop to tie the …

How the local teams are looking
With Week 4 of the prep football season now in the books, here’s my take on where our local teams stand… Jacobs: The Golden Eagles continued their undefeated start to the season with a 42-19 win over McHenry to improve to 4-0. The first three weeks of the season, most of the scoring offense has come from running backs Caz Zyks and Kyle Wright, but quarterback Jason Judson has found a new, big target in Antonio Dunner. Dunner had five catches for over 100 yards in the Jacobs’ victory and it seems like Judson and Dunner have developed some nice chemistry as the season nears its’ halfway point. Zyks still had over 100 yards rushing and looks likely to break the school rushing record but this time is rolling on all cylinders with second-year …

My take on what is happening with our local teams.
We are now at the 1/3 point of the 2011 prep football season, here’s my take on the events of Week 3…. Jacobs: The Golden Eagles finally put a full game together in pounding Grayslake North 62-21 to improve to 3-0 on the year. The first two weeks running backs Caz Zyks and Kyle Wright exchanged the lead role in rushing but Friday night, the two shared the lead with Zyks scoring twice while running for over 170 yards. Wright added three touchdowns of his own and ran for nearly 100 yards. It is becoming very obvious that this team is going to be hard to stop with Zyks and Wright in the backfield and with quarterback Jason Judson also playing well, a deep playoff run has a serious potential of happening. Next week, Jacobs travels to McHenry …

My take on how the local teams are looking so far.
We are now two weeks into the 2011 high school football schedule, here’s my take on where our local teams stand. Jacobs: The Golden Eagles started slowly Friday night at Johnsburg but were able to come away with a 28-0 win over the Skyhawks. Johnsburg focused a lot of Caz Zyks and held Zyks to 95 yards on the ground but couldn’t slow down Kyle Wright, who had runs of 47 and 55 yards in the second quarter and finished the night with 143 yards. I was out in Johnsburg for this game and if Jacobs can ever play a complete game, they have a great opportunity to finish near the top or at the top of the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division. Even with losing two first-half fumbles, Jacobs had already racked up 328 yards of offense by halftime and …

Golden Eagles roll past Johnsburg 28-0.
Last week, it was the Caz Zyks show for Jacobs in their opening-week win over Joliet West. On Friday night at Johnsburg, Zyks took a backseat to the running of fullback Kyle Wright, who rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown as the Golden Eagles moved to 2-0 on the season with a 28-0 win over the Skyhawks. Jacobs started slowly again as they did in week 1, turning the ball over twice in the opening quarter as either team scored in the opening quarter. In the second however, the Golden Eagles began to take over the game and took the lead with 8:52 left in the half on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jason Judson to Antonio Dunner. After an interception on Johnsburg’s first offensive play after the touchdown, Judson marched Jacobs back down the …

A look at some developing stories and games to watch this week.
The fall sports season is in full swing, here’s a look at some interesting stories developing early on. Watch out for Caz Zyks: The Jacobs senior running back ran for 216 yards in Week 1 against Joliet West in a 21-6 win. If Zyks keeps his pace up even for the first six games of the season, that would give him the top rushing season in Jacobs history. Darius Bowers holds the record at 1,186 yards in 2007 and with Zyks facing Johnsburg this week, who gave up over 400 yards rushing in their Week 1 loss to Grant, Zyks may just add to his per-game average. Youth Movement: Usually freshmen in cross country especially for girls come in and make a big statement early on. That’s exactly what Huntley’s Kelly Meelheib and Jacobs’ Lauren Van …

Zyks ran for three touchdowns in Friday's season-opening win over Joliet West.
Caz Zyks ran for 217 yards as the Golden Eagles won their opening game of the 2011 season over Joliet West. Zyks added three touchdowns in the 21-6 victory to add on to his 2010 season of 1321 yards and 20 touchdowns.
My thoughts on the local teams with a look back and a look ahead to next week.
With Week 1 of the high school season now in the books, here’s my look at what we have learned about our area teams…. Huntley: The Red Raiders opened with a 28-6 loss against Crystal Lake Central Friday and will need to make improvements before playing at Kaneland next week. The first varsity start for senior Jake Brock was up and down with only four completions on 12 passes but was able to run out of the pocket several times for big gains. One piece of the puzzle from last year’s team that seemed to be missing was running back James Davis. Davis ran just seven times for 11 yards as Ethan Connor handled most of the running duties with his 54 yards on the ground. Last season after being moved to the running back position, Davis ran for …
