The Pontiff will be the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years. We want to know what people in Huntley would like to see in the next pope. What sort of policies and traits do you want him to have?
Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation from the papal office effective Feb. 28, The Vatican Today reports. The Pontiff made the announcement early this morning, citing his age and health concerns as the primary reason for leaving the position. “After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” Pope Bendict XVI said. Read and listen to Pope Benedict XVI’s announcement on the Vatican’s website. Pope Benedict XVI, formerly known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, was elected as the successor to Pope John Paul II in April of 2005. He will be the first pope to resign in nearly 600 years. …

Cardinal Francis George releases a strongly worded letter as the State Legislature moves closer to a vote on gay marriage.
As gay marriage moves closer to a vote in the Illinois General Assembly, Cardinal Francis George has released a letter attacking the notion of same- sex marriage itself and urging Catholics to voice their objections. A vote could happen in the Senate as soon as today as lawmakers look to pass the legislation during the lame duck session. Illinois would become the 10th state in the country to allow same-sex marriages. In his letter, George argued that because same-sex marriages cannot be consummated and are not undertaken for the purpose of conceiving children that government, "has no power to create something that nature itself tells us is impossible." He qualifies his argument by writing that the Catholic church offers support for the …

Catholic parishioners will have to pay close attention at Mass on Nov. 27 to avoid stumbling over their words on the day that the revised Roman Missal, the chuch's ritual text of prayers, goes into effect. “It will be messy for awhile. We are going to stumble over our words,” said Fergal King, director of music and worship for St. Margaret Mary Church in Algonquin. Catholics have memorized the words of the Mass, and while Mass is not changing, the words will be different. “They know the prayers by heart, but on Nov. 27, they will need a card,” King said. King explained that the changes are a result of revisions put in place by Pope John Paul II in 2000. Those revisions were to the Latin Mass and have now been translated into English. King …

After 10 years in operation, the church looks to expand for large perish events, religious education classes.
St. Mary’s Catholic Church is ready to start the next phase of its ministry by hiring an architect to begin planning for its expansion, a church official said. St. Mary’s, on Dundee Road, serves about 5,000 members of the community and has begun having growing pains as its parish continues to grow. “We have got a beautiful church but we don’t have much space for anything else,” said the Rev. Steve Knox, who has been working at St. Mary’s for the past seven years. The addition potentially could be used for youth ministry events, different speakers, and even outside groups like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts if they were to need the space. It also would be a great place for parishioners to come together for various gatherings, he said. The …

Marriage it is a fundamental right of the individual. The only eligibility requirement for fundamental rights is being human. Reasonable restrictions may be made only when a compelling and legitimate governmental interest can withstand judicial scrutiny. Most can agree with the courts that reasonable restrictions include age, ability to demonstrate informed consent, and not being closely related…   more ›
