Free Spirit Husky Rescue saves a Siberian Husky named Shakira from being euthanized.

Employees of a Harvard animal shelter helped reunite a 6-year-old female Siberian Husky named Shakira with her owner after five years, the McHenry County Sheriff’s office said. McHenry County Sheriff’s Offices Criminal Investigation Bureau received a phone call from a Chatsworth, Ga., resident Friday about her lost Siberian Husky, Shakira, who was lost or stolen in December 2007. Last week, Heather Jackson received a call from Home Again Pet ID service telling her that Shakira was at Free Spirit Siberian Husky Rescue in Harvard. Runaway Shelter Dog Last Seen in Crystal Lake

Great Pyrenees mix jumped two 6-foot fences at Woodstock rescue.

Helping Paws Animal Shelter in Woodstock is looking for clues to the whereabouts of Ivory, a white Great Pyrenees mix that escaped from the shelter’s yard on May 7. Joy Current, manager of Helping Paws, said the dog was last seen on May 13 near McHenry County College. She said the sighting was off Ridgefield Road, near the railroad tracks, in Crystal Lake. Current said Ivory was also spotted at a Crystal Lake park. She believes he traveled through farm fields to get to the Crystal Lake area. “He was a very shy dog, but friendly with other dogs. He was micro-chipped. He was just getting ready for adoption,” Current said. Ivory is a young dog, less than two years old. Ivory’s escape occurred on Saturday, May 7, while a shelter volunteer had …

Muddy Paws Site Goes Down

Deer Park boarding/rescue facility where 34 dead dogs were discovered gets demolished.

The Muddy Paws building, where Diane Eldrup is suspected to have starved 34 dogs to death, is going down. A demolition crew, M. Rizzi & Son, arrived this morning to begin the process of erasing the former dog rescue and boarding facility from the Deer Park landscape. "This is where my beautiful Lucha lived, suffered and died," said Janice Robinson, a foster parent of one of the dogs who died at Muddy Paws. Robinson said she was brought to tears upon hearing of the demolition. Pete Rizzi, of M. Rizzi & Son, said the company was contracted by the bank to demolish the building. The former home and business of Diane Eldrup and her estranged husband, Kurt Eldrup, was foreclosed. IBT Holdings is listed as the current owner, in real estate …

Animal House Shelter HOWLoween Chili Cook-Off

Benefit draws dozens to raise money for no kill shelter.

Animal House Shelter's Chili Cook-off brought out amateur chefs and their pets, dressed in costume, to benefit the no kill shelter. Volunteers at the shelter's  2nd annual Chili Cook-off were not going to let an early-morning rain, gray skies or high winds dampen their spirits or taste buds. Saturday's weather drove the competition inside where dozens of spectators and AHS supporters samples and judged the entries, discussing the different attributes of each entry. A "vote of popular opinion" was used to determine who would take top honor in the chili cook-off.  The chili was sampled and the votes were counted. Newlyweds, Tiffany and David Wayman, took home the top prize of four tickets to Zanies Comedy club, with a chili recipe they had …
