Higher Speed Limit Bill Heads to Gov's Desk

70 mph on rural interstates not a done deal yet, as bill has its opponents.

A bill to increase the maximum speed limit in Illinois could hit Gov. Pat Quinn’s desk for his signature soon. Whether Quinn will sign it remains to be seen. The bill, introduced by Republican State. Sen. Jim Oberweis, would raise the speed limit on rural Illinois highways to 70 mph. The bill, which has passed both chambers of the state legislature, has been met with opposition due to safety concerns by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, according to the Chicago Tribune. “The progression of this legislation is a good example of what can be accomplished when lawmakers work together in a bipartisan manner for the good of our state,” Oberweis said. “It was sponsored…

Highcrest Middle School has broken the Guinness World Record for most twins in a single grade.

Approximately 10 percent of the 5th grade class can claim the record as a twin. The previous record was 16 sets of twins. Luke and Ryan Novosel, dedicated readers of the Guinness Book, discovered that they could break the record when reading the book one night. "The boys were reading one Sunday night and started discussing the many sets of twins right in our neighborhood," Mike Novosel, Luke and Ryan's Dad, said. "My wife and I figured by the time they arrived at New Trier in a few years they could break the record.  There were shrieks of excitement when Luke …

Patch Reads: Malcolm at Midnight

A great summer book for young readers posted by James Patterson's READKIDDOREAD.com.

There was also a glasses-wearing elderly iguana, a grumpy fish who could spell, a ghost in the clock tower, a secret message in the library, and a twisted evil that lived on the fourth floor of our school. But those’ll all come later. First, there was a rat: Malcolm.” That is the beginning of a pageturner for kids ages 8-12 called Malcolm at Midnight. It is written by W. H. Beck and illustrated by Brian Lies. The story continues: And what an extraordinary rat he is! After being fortuitously mistaken for a mouse at the pet store, Malcolm finds his way to Mr. Binney’s fifth grade classroom at McKenna Elementary School. No Quick Fix to Coyote Pack Roaming Algonquin

Illinois Department of Natural Resources estimates 8 to 12 coyotes are hanging around Algonquin.

Coyotes are here and it’s best to learn to live with them is the message an Illinois Department of Natural Resources officer brought to Algonquin this week. Conservation Officer Richard Riedel estimates Algonquin has a pack of 8 to 12 coyotes roaming areas along Route 31, Huntington Drive, Harnish Drive and Hansen Road. “They are here,” Riedel said. Coyotes have been here for a while, he said. Sightings may be increasing a little bit because the coyote’s habitat has been shrinking due to continued urban development, he said. Speculation is the Western Bypass construction has forced coyotes out in the neighborhoods where residents report hearing a lot of howling. Riedel provided some facts and safety tips to the Algonquin village board …

Bill Reining won the jackpot on April 26.

Huntley resident Bill Reining thinks he was in the right place at the right time after winning $325,000 in the April 26 Lucky Day Lotto drawing. “I usually go to the fitness center in the morning, and then on my way home I stop at the store to get my Lucky Day Lotto quick pick ticket," Reining said. "On this day, for no reason, I went to the store first.” Reining believes this change in his schedule may have led to his lottery windfall, according to an Illinois Lottery press release. Later that day, Reining went to www.illinoislottery.com to check the winning Lucky Day Lotto numbers.  When he saw that his ticket matched all five numbers – 09 – 19 – 23 – 33 – 36 – he called to his wife Jackie, “We won! We won,”  the release said. They plan…
