A 25-year-old man accused of providing alcohol to a Lake in the Hills teen on the day of her death has his probation revoked on Thursday, according to the Northwest Herald. Brett Jurgens, who was on probation for burglary, allegedly gave alcohol to Stephanie Chiakas, 17, in March. Chiakas was found dead in a Crystal Lake home and a toxicology report shows she had several drugs in her system but not alcohol, according to the article. Read more on the Northwest Herald website.
The underage party was broken up in unincorporated Marengo early Thursday morning.
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested for allegations that he hosted an underage party, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's Office news release. Police responded to the 4500 block of Millstream Road in unincorporated Marengo around 12:30 a.m. Thursday for a report of a suspicious person, according to the news release. Police said when deputies arrived they found 11 minors partying in a wooded area at the location. The teen was arrested for hosting the party, for possession of marijuana, paraphernalia and brass knuckles, according to the news release. Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer travel season. This weekend, more than 7 million vehicles are expected to hit state tollways, and drivers should be aware of the 37 miles worth of road construction work between the Elgin Toll Plaza and Illinois 39 in Rockford. Tollway officials want to remind drivers the speed limit in construction work zones is 45 mph, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, regardless of whether workers are present. “This weekend marks the beginning of the busy summer travel season on the Tollway and we want our customers to stay safe,” said Illinois Tollway Executive Director Kristi Lafleur. Around 40,000 vehicles travel through the intersection everyday, according to the Northwest Herald.
A group of municipal and county representatives wrote Gov. Pat Quinn last week seeking funds for improvements at the southern intersection of routes 47 and 176 in Lakewood, according to the Northwest Herald. The improvements are meant to improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection, which the Illinois Department of Transportation has ranked as one of the worst in the state, and includes moving Pleasant Valley Road to the south to make a four-way intersection, creating left turn lanes and adding two through lanes, according to the article. A fifth grade picnic held inside the gymnasium at Algonquin Lakes Elementary School Thursday morning ended with six children being sent to area hospitals with minor injuries after an inflatable slide tipped over, said Gary Chester, a District 300 safety officer. Emergency officials were called to Algonquin Lakes,1401 Compton Drive in Algonquin, at 12 p.m. Thursday, according to an Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District press release. The accident occurred when several children climbed up the slide at one time, the slide started to sway and then tipped over, Chester said. A bill to increase the maximum speed limit in Illinois could hit Gov. Pat Quinn’s desk for his signature soon. Whether Quinn will sign it remains to be seen. The bill, introduced by Republican State. Sen. Jim Oberweis, would raise the speed limit on rural Illinois highways to 70 mph. Highcrest Middle School has broken the Guinness World Record for most twins in a single grade.
Highcrest Middle School is seeing double. The Wilmette school announced this week that it had broken the Guiness World Record for Most Twins in a Single Grade, with 23 sets of twins. Approximately 10 percent of the 5th grade class can claim the record as a twin. The previous record was 16 sets of twins. Luke and Ryan Novosel, dedicated readers of the Guinness Book, discovered that they could break the record when reading the book one night.
