Winter Weather Advisory Until Noon Sunday; Wind Chill Warning Begins Tonight

Winter Weather Advisory until 6 a.m. Sunday


McHenry County is under a Winter Weather Advisory until 6 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.

Other counties included under the advisory are Winnebago, Boone and Ogle.

Under the advisory, periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Motorists should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities, using caution while driving, the NWS states. 

Brisk northwest winds of 15 to 30 mph could results in blowing and drifting snow with reduced visibility. 

Some counties in the southern and eastern suburbs have been issued a Winter Storm Warning until 6 a.m. Sunday. Those include DeKalb, Cook, Kane, Lee, DuPage, Kendall, Grundy, Will and LaSalle. 

Wind Chill Warning

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Wind Chill Warning effective 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, until noon on Tuesday, Jan. 7. 

A prolongued period of dangerously cold wind chills are likely Sunday night through Tuesday morning. The most extreme wind chills will be late Sunday night through Monday afternoon.  

Wind chills colder than 30 degrees below zero are expected. Wind chills of -40 to -50 are likely late Sunday night into Monday afternoon. 

A wind chill warning means the wind will combine with very cold air to create dangerously low wind chill values. This will result in frost bit and lead to hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken, the NWS states.
