Clinic Receives $50,000 for Cancer Screening and Education

Foundation provides generous donation.

The Family Health Partnership Clinic and its volunteers were already ecstatic about the incredible successful event they had just pulled off with Care4 Breast Cancer Race.

In its 11th year, the race had already beaten all records so far.

“We had 2200 participants,” said Liz Annetti, Chief of Race.  “The weather was fantastic, the volunteers were wonderful, and the participants were just inspiring.  We think that this is the biggest non profit race in the county.”

But there was more to come.  After the race and during the awards program, one more piece of good news awaited.  Steve Gavers and several members of the board of the Gavers Community Cancer Foundation came up to the stage to talk about the need for early screening and detection services, particularly among the uninsured who may not have access to care.  The Gavers Community Cancer Foundation is known for their biggest fundraiser – Barndance – which takes place in July in Woodstock.

Every year, the Foundation distributes the proceeds of the event along with other events they do to several local and regional non-profits.  This year, Steve and the board presented Suzanne Hoban, the Executive Director of the Family Health Partnership Clinic, with a check for $50,000.

The Family Health Partnership Clinic provides care to the uninsured of the county through 30 volunteer physicians and a dedicated staff.  Last year, it had over 8600 health care visits, and over $2,000,000 in medicine alone was given to those who had no other access to care.

“This money is significant,” Hoban said. “This pays for all of the testing that we get no other funding for.  This pays for the education time, the procedures, the nurse time – and so much more.”

Last year, Gavers funding paid for enhanced cervical cancer screenings, biopsies and exams for uninsured individuals.  Still, these are but a small fraction of the cancer screening services the clinic provides.

“We are so grateful to the Gavers Community Cancer Foundation for allowing us to bring these needed screenings and procedures to those who would otherwise go without.  We are humbled by the community support.  Because our clinic receives almost no government funding, we are truly a clinic supported by the community for the community,” Hoban said.

Since 2000, the Gavers Community Cancer Foundation has donated almost $3,000,000 to nonprofit organizations.
