We're happy to welcome team 'Sun City Surfers' to Relay for Life of Huntley. Their team captain, Mary Lou Dorgan, is very passionate about the cause. She jumped right in last year, again this year, willing to help with committee responsibilities too!
"5 years ago I did the Susan B. Koleman 60 mile walk. It was quite an experience but it was so large and overwhelming. At that time, I did not have any personal connection with cancer. Since then, several family members became afflicted with different forms of cancer. After moving to Sun City, I talked with many people who were profoundly affected by cancer, either on a personal level or with family or friends. When I heard about the Relay For Life, I liked the idea that it was more community centered. Local businesses that I frequented supported the Relay effort. Newspapers reported on the progress and kept the community informed. The survivor lap meant that my family members could participate without committing to the whole night. It just sounded like something I wanted to be a part of and contribute to.
Most team members have similar stories. They walk for family, friends or themselves as survivors. Again, being a local activity makes the Relay attractive and easy to participate in. I wish great success for this year's Relay For Life !!!"
