Huntley Library Busy Place This Summer

Library releases schedule of events in June.

 

School is out for summer and if you are searching for things to do with the kids, the Huntley Area Public Library has lots of offerings.

The big news at the Huntley Library is its REALLY BIG SUMMER READING EXTRAVAGANZA. The library’s 2012 Summer Reading Extravaganza starts June 11 and runs through Aug. 4 for children from birth to sixth grade. Parents may register kids in person at the library or online.

Huntley Library offers summer reading programs for teens and adults too.   We Like Big Books (and we cannot lie) Summer Reading program is for teens grades 7 to 12 and An Experience of  Olympic Proportions is for adults 18 and older.

To kickoff Summer Reading, the library will be holding two special sign up days. Visit the Program Room Monday, June 11 and Tuesday, June 12. Families will receive a Summer Reading folder from the Friends Foundation while supplies last.

Here are a few things offered for kids this summer:

  • The Essential P.T. Barnum

        Wednesday, June 27, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

        Author and magician William Pack reveals the amazing life of P.T. Barnum, through storytelling and recreations of historical performances. Hear about what shaped this great American showman.  Experience the wonders of Barnum’s American Museum and 1860’s era sideshow acts.  Recommended for ages 10 and up.   • Red Cross Babysitting

        Wednesday, June 13 and Saturday, June 16

        1 to 4 p.m. Ages 11 to14 

        Become a successful babysitter! Learn how to care for children of all ages, basic first aid and rescue breathing techniques, and other valuable babysitting skills.  The $45 class fee includes a Babysitter’s Training Handbook, Emergency Reference Guide, CD ROM (which includes everything you need to run your own babysitting business), and babysitting certificate.  You must be able to attend both sessions.  Space is limited.  Please pay cash or check (made out to the Huntley Area Public Library) at registration to hold your spot. 

 

  • Teen Tuesdays

        1 to 3 p.m., Grades 6-12

        June 19: Big Bucks: Make a duct tape wallet to carry your hard-earned summer cash.

       June 26: Big Dreams: Create a dream journal where you can record (and analyze) your dreams.

 

  • Teen Zine

        Friday, June 22, 4 to 5 p.m. Grades 6 - 12

        Teen Zine is the library’s teen writers’ club.  Share your writing, artwork, and/or photography with the group and help us put together the next issue of our ‘zine.  Can’t make the meeting?  Submissions are accepted on an ongoing basis – pick up a submission form at the Information Desk, or submit your work online (ya.huntleylibrary.info/tzonlineform).

 

  • Teen Book Club

        Thursday, June 28, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

        Read a BIG book this month – a long book, a tall book, a classic, a bestseller, or something else that ties into the “big book” theme.  Meet other book lovers and get a chance to talk about the books you’ve been reading.  Bring a book (or more) to share/discuss with the group. For grades 7 to 12.

 

  • YU-GI-OH Battle Royale +

        Saturday, June 30, 3:30 to 5 p.m.

        Join us at the library for an afternoon of game play.  Bring your trading card games (Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic, etc.), board games, RPGs, etc., and meet new friends. For grades 6-12.

  • Page Turners                                                                                         Tuesdays, June 5, 19, 26 4:30-5:30p.m.                                                                                                                                    Children are invited to read with an adult volunteer.  Sessions last from 15-30 minutes.  Drop in any time during the hour.  Page Turners get a membership card punched each time they attend.  After four punches, the child may choose a free book and small prize from the Friends Foundation.    

 

  • Wednesday Take-Home Crafts

        June 13, 20, 27,  12-8 p.m.

       For ages 2 and up. While supplies last.

 

  • MEET CLIFFORD & WATCH HIS REALLY BIG MOVIE AT THE LIBRARY

        Movie: June 14, 10-11:15 a.m.

        Visit Clifford at 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m.

        The BIG, red canine performs tries to win a lifetime supply of dog food. For all ages. Dial 847.669.5386 ext. 26 to register.

  • Making a REALLY BIG Difference!                                                                                                                                                                              June 18-30                                                                                           We are accepting donations of items for children in need.  These items will go into Care Bags to be distributed by The Care Bags Foundation to kids in crisis situations who have to leave their homes with very few belongings.  If you sew, you may want to make some Care Bags.  Bag patterns and item lists are available at the Children’s Desk.

 

  • Art Discovery                                                                                                                                                                           Wednesday, June 20, 5 to 6 p.m.                                                                                                                   Join us at the library for an art session mixing creativity and fun!  We’ll work together on a REALLY BIG art project, so dress for a mess!  Class size is limited!  For ages 8 to 10. 

 

  •  Kids Chess

         Thursday, June 21, 7 to 8 p.m.                               

         Chess players of any skill level meet in the Program Room to play and  strategize.  Take turns on our new BIG set.  Beginners welcome.  Adult family members are also welcome to play. For ages 8 and up.

 

  • Dave Dinaso's Traveling World of Reptiles

        6:30 to 7:45 p.m., Friday, June 22                                                                                                                                                                                                                       This program is so BIG it’s being held in the Park District’s Cosman Center! Meet an enormous python, a gargantuan monitor lizard, a huge iguana, and a gigantic tortoise! Pick up free tickets at the Children’s Desk while supplies last. For all ages.

 

  • I'm a Big Kid Now Potty Party

        10:30 to 11 a.m., Monday, June 25

        Join us in this celebration of potty training with stories, songs and activities.  For ages 20 months to 4 years.

 

  • Lego Club

        6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday, June 25

        Come to Lego® Club!  We’ll give you a suggested challenge; add imagination, the library’s Legos®, and your great building skills and show off the results!  Work together on a REALLY BIG project. Watch for photos on Kids’ Corner page. For grades K-5.

 

  • Read to a REALLY BIG Dog!

        10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, June 30

        You many have read to a dog before at the library, but now is your chance to read to a REALLY BIG dog! Dyno, a one-year old Great Dane will be in our Program Room to listen to your REALLY BIG stories. For families.

  • BabyPalooza

        10:15-10:45 & 11:15-11:45 a.m., Tuesdays, June 5, 19, 26

        Stories and songs with Miss Nora!  The last 10 minutes of BabyPalooza are reserved for social playtime.  For ages birth-23 months.

 

  • Story Time

        10-10:30 & 11-11:30 a.m. Wednesdays/Thursdays, June 6, 7, 13, 20, 27

        After stories, songs with Miss Jodi, children will complete a craft.  For ages 2-6.

 

  • Pajamarama 

        7 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 19

        Visit the library in your PJs for bedtime stories and a snack with Miss Jane. Geared for families of 2-6 year-olds.
