Red Raiders Soccer Stays Undefeated in FVC

Huntley responds 26 seconds after goal ties game in 3-1 win over Cary-Grove

One sign of a quality team is their ability to respond to adversity.

Thursday night, Huntley’s girls’ soccer felt some adversity with the Red Raiders losing a second-half lead against Cary-Grove. Huntley however did respond 26 seconds later to retake the lead and added another goal later for a 3-1 win over the Trojans in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division play.

After a scoreless first half, Huntley (11-1-1, 6-0) finally dented the scoreboard on a Delaney Loprieno goal five minutes into the half. After Cary tied the score on a Korey Kronforst goal, Loprieno gave Huntley the lead right back and Aimee Wronski tacked on an insurance goal six minutes later with a shot between Cary goalkeeper Krystal Felderman’s legs.

“It was a perfect pass to me, I just had to touch it for it to go in,” Loprieno said, “On the second one, Rachel (Chapuis) played a ball through and I ran onto it.”
Loprieno added that it was a big moment when the team got the lead back so quickly especially for the team’s seniors.

“I think it was really important because we wanted it so bad, just being able to not go down when they came back and tied it,” Loprieno said. “I know that’s a big thing with all these seniors on the team and I look up to them so much. They really are great leaders and always motivating no matter what.”

Wronski said playing against Cary-Grove is always a big deal.

“It’s a game you talk about all day and a game you want to come all pumped up for,” Wronski said. “It’s a big rivalry and we are always looking forward to this game.”

Huntley coach Kris Grabner said his team played a better game after the half.

“We played a better second half. It’s hard for both teams to play soccer on this field. It’s narrow, it’s bumpy, full of mud and it’s slick so we came in knowing it wasn’t going to be pretty,” Grabner said. “It was more about work rate and winning 50/50 balls. We knew they were going to come out and play hard and I can’t say enough about the way they played.”

Huntley will host Johnsburg Monday at 4:30 p.m. in their next contest.
