Red Raiders Fall in Sectional Semifinal

Lowery scores 12 while Goede adds ten as Huntley can't overcome Cary-Grove in 57-37 season-ending defeat

The crowd was at a fevered pitch and everything was going Huntley’s way against Cary-Grove Tuesday night in the IHSA Class 4A Jacobs Sectional semifinal after Carly Goede hit a three-pointer late in the third quarter to bring the Red Raiders back within three.

Unforunately for Huntley after that three-pointer, things stopped going the Red Raiders’ way as Cary went on a 20-2 run to defeat the Red Raiders 57-37 in Algonquin. After both teams had trouble scoring early, C-G went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-3 lead and led 13-7 after one quarter. Cary started the second on a 6-2 run to lead 17-7 before Huntley cut the Cary lead in half, pulling to within five at 22-17 midway through the quarter. Cary would be able to extend their lead back to nine by the half at 30-21.

In the second half, Cary opened up a 12-point lead before the Red Raiders made their way back into the game. After the Goede three-pointer that completed a 9-0 Huntley lead, the Cary lead was down to just three. From that point forward, it was all Cary-Grove, scoring 13 straight points and 25 of the last 30 points of the game.  Kadie Lowery led Huntley with 12 points while Goede added ten. Lowery said that the team has significant hope after Goede’s shot cut the lead to three points.

“It was a good feeling, we felt like we had the momentum that we were coming back and we were able to hang with them for a little bit but unfortunately it just slipped away,” Lowery said.

Huntley coach Steve Raethz said that he had three keys going into the game.

“We had to rebound the basketball well, not turn the ball over and convert back defensively,” Raethz said. “I thought we did our part converting back defensively. I just don’t think we did a good job on the glass. I thought we got outworked on the glass and I think there were some very crucial times when we needed a basket or we needed to take care of the ball and it didn’t happen. We cut it (the lead) down (to three) and a couple turnovers there and you can‘t do that against a team the quality of Cary-Grove.”

Huntley finishes the season with a 20-9 record.
