Red Raiders Clinch FVC Valley Title

Brunschon scores 24 to lead Huntley to 64-42 win over Cary-Grove to win Fox Valley Conference Valley Division crown.

In their final game of the Fox Valley Conference season, Huntley and Cary-Grove’s boys’ basketball team had two completely different goals Friday night.

The Red Raiders were looking for a conference championship while the Trojans were looking to finish the conference season with a .500 record. Tyler Brunschon scored a game-high 24 points as Huntley made ten 3-pointers for the second straight time against Cary-Grove and clinched the FVC Valley title with a 64-42 victory in Huntley.

After Cary’s Matt Aulert scored the first two points of the game, Huntley (21-4, 9-1) went on to score the game’s next eight points and 13 of the next 15 to take a 13-4 lead.

Huntley added another 13-2 run to start the second quarter of play and outscored C-G 21-7 in the second quarter to take a 34-13 lead which would have been worse if not for a Jon Guay three-pointer at the buzzer to put three more on the board for Cary.

The Red Raiders put a final stamp on the game with an 11-2 run to start the third quarter and would lead by 30 late in the third quarter. Cary put together a 9-2 run late in the game but it wasn’t enough.

Brunschon said he enlisted a little help after having some bad shooting nights lately.

“I came here this morning and felt good. My brother Todd helped me get my confidence back,” Brunschon said. “That helped and got me in a good mood and playing for a conference title always gets you motivated to play.”

Brunschon added it is a great feeling to win a conference championship.

“It’s a big thing especially winning one on the Valley side, it’s a hard side to win on,” Brunschon said. “They have really good teams on this side with Jacobs, McHenry and Crystal Lake South so we’re proud that we won it.”

Huntley coach Marty Manning said he was generally happy with his team’s full-game performance.

“I thought we played a very good first half,” Manning said. “I thought defensively, we were solid and made some shots against their zone. We continued to push the ball up the floor and got some easy baskets. The one thing I was disappointed about was the turnovers we had to start the fourth quarter. It was the one thing I talked about before the quarter started that we need to play a clean first two minutes and we didn’t.”

Cary (10-15, 4-6) got 11 points from Nick Richter and Jon Guay while playing without Alex Posey and Steve Camporese, who were both out with the flu.

Cary coach Ralph Schuetzle said though there was one player in particular that gave Schuetzle some hope for the rest of the season.

“The bright spot was (Jake) Bianchi, who showed he can get into the lane where we need him to get and he was the reason why we had a pretty darn good fourth quarter (where Cary scored 20 of their 42 points),” Schuetzle said. “We got to find some positives here and maybe we found something Jake running the point, take some pressure off of Nick (Richter) and be able to open up some things for him on
the perimeter.”

Cary finishes their regular season Tuesday at Prairie Ridge while Huntley will host Marengo Friday night in their regular season finale.
