Red Raiders Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader

Lyman and Perkins each knock in six as Huntley wins 8-1 and 12-0 over Johnsburg in Fox Valley Conference play

For the first four innings of Saturday’s Fox Valley Conference doubleheader against Johnsburg, bats were as cold as the weather.

As the temperature rose, the Red Raiders’ bats heated up too as Huntley swept the doubleheader with 8-1 and 12-0 wins over the Skyhawks to remain undefeated in the conference.

In the opening game, Huntley (8-1, 4-0) got on the board right away as Carlos Alvarez led off the game with a double and scored on a groundout by Colin Lyman.

After Johnsburg tied the game in the third, the Red Raiders came right back in the top of the fourth to retake the lead as Bryce Only, who led off with a double, scored after a throw to first.

In the fifth, Huntley tore the game open with six runs. Lyman knocked in two more runs with a double to score Tyler Davila and Alvarez. Brody Burkart hit another two-run double two batters later to score Nick Corpolongo and Lyman and Jake Perkins finished the scoring in the inning with a two-run single to score Only and Burkart. Bryan Doherty pitched five innings, striking out seven to get the win.

In the nightcap, Huntley took control of the game with a four-run opening inning and adding five more in the second for a 9-0 cushion. The Red Raiders tacked on three more in the fourth and retired the Skyhawks in the fifth to finish the game by the 10-run rule. Perkins and Lyman each ended the afternoon with six RBIs while Alvarez had four hits and scored four times. Lyman also scored four times in the doubleheader rout. Craig Klein threw four shutout innings, giving up just four hits to get the win in the second game. Huntley coach Andy Jakubowski said that the men on the mound were great.

“I thought our pitching did a real nice job today, Doherty and Klein both,” Jakubowski said. “We got some people some work in Kostalek, Prokuski and Danny Lowry and our pitchers threw strikes and we made plays before them. We only had two errors all day and I’m proud of our defensive effort.”

Jakubowski added that the team had been having trouble scoring before a recent uptick of hitting.

“We have struggling hitting-wise coming into this week,” Jakubowski said. “We made a strong focus after a 2-1 game against Woodstock North about our situational hitting and ever since then, we had done a much better job the last three games and we have definitely improved. Hopefully, we continue to build on that.”

Huntley will look to continue their undefeated string in the FVC Tuesday in Algonquin with a 4:30 p.m. game at .
