Looking Back At Week 2 Of the Prep Football Season

My take on how the local teams are looking so far.

We are now two weeks into the 2011 high school football schedule, here’s my take on where our local teams stand.

Jacobs: The Golden Eagles started slowly Friday night at Johnsburg but were able to come away with a 28-0 win over the Skyhawks. Johnsburg focused a lot of Caz Zyks and held Zyks to 95 yards on the ground but couldn’t slow down Kyle Wright, who had runs of 47 and 55 yards in the second quarter and finished the night with 143 yards. I was out in Johnsburg for this game and if Jacobs can ever play a complete game, they have a great opportunity to finish near the top or at the top of the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division. Even with losing two first-half fumbles, Jacobs had already racked up 328 yards of offense by halftime and stopped a Johnsburg team that looked overmatched and undermanned the whole night in being shutout for the second straight week.

Let’s not forget about the work of Jason Judson, who had three touchdowns including a 10-yard rushing score midway through the second quarter and finished the night 17-for-28 passing for 193 yards. Once Valley Division play starts however, there are tough games with Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge ahead but both of those games are in Algonquin. Only time will tell if the team can pull a full game together before that time comes. Jacobs plays at home against Grayslake North on Friday.

Huntley: The Red Raiders fell to 0-2 on Friday night with a 34-13 loss at Kaneland as Knights quarterback Drew David threw four touchdown passes. Huntley got the lead early on a 33-yard touchdown run by Ethan Connor but then fell behind on the hurricane of TD throws from David. The fact Huntley had three turnovers didn’t help matters and now the time has come to figure out what to change before it gets too late and playoff chances slip away.

Next week, Huntley gets to host Prairie Ridge who is 2-0 already this season and has outscored their opponents 102-14 so this becomes a crucial week for the Red Raiders. While four of the seven teams in the FVC Valley are 2-0, it could mean even if Huntley finishes 5-4, they should make the playoffs. Huntley then must beat two of those four undefeated teams to stay in contention. Jake Brock continued his progress at the quarterback position with a late touchdown run to make the score appear closer at the end. The time is now for Matt Gehrig’s team, the game this week will bring many clues to what the rest of the season could bring.

Dundee-Crown: The Chargers also fell to 0-2 with a 40-17 loss to Streamwood in their home opener. One of the biggest bright spots for D-C was sophomore Cody Lane, who ran for over 100 yards on just six carries. As I mentioned last week, one big thing that the Chargers had to do was slow down Streamwood’s Alex Morrow. Morrow didn’t repeat his 300-yard performance from a year ago but did run for 170 yards on 15 carries. D-C has to find a way to stop allowing big games on the ground and simply just big runs in general.

Next week, the Chargers host McHenry and their quarterback Robert Tonyan. During McHenry’s 1-8 season in 2010, Tonyan threw for over 2700 yards. This could pose a problem for Dundee-Crown as on Friday night, Streamwood quarterback Dalton Lundeen threw for 240 yards and completed all but one of his passes. This is a chance for D-C to get a win if they can hold down Tonyan and find running lanes for players like Lane. It appears early on, wins may be hard to come by in Carpentersville so games against McHenry and Huntley may be the team’s lone chances to experience victory this year.
