Jacobs stays undefeated with Homecoming win

Golden Eagles defeat Cary-Grove for first time since 2001 with 28-20 win.

It had been a long time since the Jacobs football program had defeated Cary-Grove.

In fact, it had been since 2001 that the Golden Eagles had come away with a win over the Trojans. Friday night, Jacobs got another chance on Homecoming night and the Golden Eagles didn't let the chance slip away as Jason Judson had three touchdowns including one with two minutes to go to give Jacobs a 28-20 win to remain undefeated on the season at 5-0 and 2-0 in the Fox Valley Conference Valley Division.

The Trojans (3-2, 0-2 FVC Valley) got on the scoreboard first a little over three minutes into the game on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Quinn Baker. Jacobs responded later in the quarter on a 18-yard touchdown pass from Judson to Evan Bishop to tie the game at 7 after one quarter. C-G regained the lead with 8:38 left on a 28-yard field goal by Josh Buckingham to give Cary a 10-7 lead. Judson would lead the offense back down the field and Caz Zyks, who rushed for 91 yards for the game, scored from three yards out with 3:56 to go to give Jacobs a 14-10 lead. Buckingham added a 24-yard field goal to end the first half to pull Cary back within one at 14-13.

Cary would take the lead for the third time on a one-yard run by Patrick O'Malley with 1:42 to go in the third quarter to go ahead 20-14. However, Jacobs would respond on their first play after the touchdown on a 66-yard touchdown pass from Judson to Jake Gierlak to give the Golden Eagles a 21-20 lead nine seconds after Cary had taken the lead. Jacobs coach Bill Mitz said the team had made some changes with that pass play during the half.

"It was huge. We made the adjustment at halftime with that route," Mitz said. "It was the perfect call."

Cary would get the ball back and drove into Jacobs territory before being stopped on 4th-and-1 just short to give the ball back to Jacobs. Judson finished the Golden Eagles' long drive to run out the clock with a five-yard run which gave Jacobs a 28-20 lead. Judson said that it was a simple play call on the touchdown.

"It was just a rollout play, we thought they would be thinking run since we were on the goal line and had been punching it in there all night," Judson said. "We thought we would catch them off-guard with the bootleg."

Cary would get one last shot but Baker's fourth-down pass was incomplete and after a couple runs by Judson and a kneeldown, the celebration was on in Algonquin. Judson said it is a great feeling to be 5-0.

"It sounds really good," Judson said. "At the beginning of the season, we said we wanted to be 4-0 going into Cary and play them for Homecoming. We came up on top so I guess we did what we set out to do."

Judson was 6-for-8 passing for 137 yards including the long pass to Gierlak. Baker led the Cary rushing attack with 113 yards on 25 carries while O'Malley had 95 yards on 17 carries. C-G coach Brad Seaburg said that the Gierlak play was a big turning point after his team had taken the lead.

"That was killer," Seaburg said. "It was a game of momentum too, just as we got a little momentum with that touchdown, they got one again. We felt we would score another touchdown too."

Jacobs will play Huntley next week while Cary will host McHenry.
