Huntley High Lacrosse All-Star Heading to Benedictine

Editor's note: This is an updated story. A previous version contained incorrect information about Huntley High School's Raiders Lacrosse Club and the lacrosse becoming an official school sport. Club officials are working with the school and district on getting lacrosse officially recognized.

Tyler Romeiser not only is graduating from in June, he’s graduating from high school lacrosse to college-level, Division 3 lacrosse.

Romeiser, 18, recently decided to attend Benedictine University in Lisle, where he’ll be a starter on the school’s new lacrosse team. The senior plans to pursue premed. He received a Merit Scholarship.

“I am super-excited,” he said about joining a lacrosse program just getting off the ground and meeting his new teammates.

Benedictine coach Jay Farrell has spent a few years tracking down the best lacrosse players from around the country for the program, Romeiser said. The team is in one of the most competitive NCAA divisions, he said.

He decided to attend Benedictine after talking with one of his coaches. His coach said Romeiser would be able to start rather than ride the bench for a few years, the lacrosse player said.

Benedictine’s lacrosse program will be new, like the sport itself. Lacrosse is “still relatively new compared to how long football” has been around, he said.

Romeiser is excited to be part of a program from the ground up.

“I met a few of my fellow players at Benedictine, I was so ecstatic to see a bunch of them and see their skills.”

Romeiser has worked on his own skills since taking up the up and coming sport five years ago. He plays attack position. Lacrosse is a lot like soccer with the field split in three portions: attack, defense and faceoff, he said.

Lacrosse requires “speed, agility, quickness,” Romeiser said. “Hand-eye coordination is super important. I play wall ball a lot.”

“My favorite thing is getting rid of all my energy,” he said. “I love to be doing something.”

When Romeiser began playing lacrosse in middle school, it wasn’t the most popular sport. ’s team is actually part of the Lacrosse Club.

Romeiser has played with the Huntley High Lacrosse Club since freshman year. The club is getting ready to wrap up its season next month. Its record, to date, is 8-3, he said.

He also has played with traveling teams, like Oxygen and True Lacrosse, for several years. He’s been on the True Lacrosse All-Star team and has played at many tournaments with that team.

True Lacrosse is one of the most prestigious leagues in the area and coached by former professional lacrosse player Jake Dean. The team is going to play in Denver for the High Point Classic.

Romeiser is on the All Star 2012 team again this year.
