Huntley Girls Win Fourth Regional Title

Lowery scores 13 as Red Raiders beat DeKalb 40-34 in Huntley Regional final, will face Trojans Tuesday night in sectional semifinal at Jacobs.

Huntley’s girls’ basketball team wanted one more shot at Cary-Grove after losing to the Trojans twice in the regular season.

The Red Raiders will get that chance after defeating DeKalb Thursday night 40-34 in the IHSA Class 4A Huntley Regional final. It is the fourth regional title in the past five years for Huntley, who will face Cary again on Tuesday night in the Jacobs Sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. in Algonquin. Kadie Lowery scored 13 points to lead Huntley (20-8) and said that it was great to get back to the winning track of regional titles.

“It was good, last year we fell a little short and I know me and a couple other girls have had a few regional titles so it was good to get one last one before we graduate,” Lowery said.

Huntley recently got point guard Carly Goede back into the lineup after missing several games with an ankle injury, Lowery added that it was a difficult grind without Goede in the lineup.

“It’s really good having her back, a couple games we won but it was tough,” Lowery said. “Without your starting point guard comes leadership and we’re lucky to have her back.”

With the win over DeKalb, Lowery and the rest of her teammates got their third chance at Cary-Grove. When the two teams played in Cary, Huntley had a 15-point second half lead slip away in a 58-52 loss on Jan. 12. In the return matchup at Huntley, the Red Raiders were never in the ballgame as Cary scored the first 16 points of the game in a 59-18 Trojans victory on Feb. 4. Since that loss, Huntley has went 5-1 and Lowery said that getting another chance at Cary was enough motivation in the regionals.

“The first time we played them, we played well and the second time, we fell short so we were hoping we would get one more shot to get the win against them,” Lowery said. “We fell apart that game (at Huntley) and we came to practice the next day and knew we had to get it together. I think we got it together now with some big games.”

If Huntley can defeat Cary the third time around, the Red Raiders will face the winner of the second semifinal Tuesday night between Geneva and Rockton Hononegah on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
