As you gear up for the cool weather, you must also prepare for the impending flu season.
Each year hundreds of thousands of Americans are hospitalized for the influenza virus. Depending on the severity of the virus each season, influenza may result in as many as 50,000 deaths per year.
In an effort to mitigate the impact of the flu and support local community food banks, Advocate Health Care is offering “Free Flu Shots for Food” at several locations Saturday, October 20 and Sunday October 21.
Every person, 18 years or older, who brings a non-perishable food item to one of the participating Immediate Care Centers will receive a FREE flu shot - $25 value (while supplies last.) All food items will be donated to local community food banks in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Locally, the Advocate Good Shepherd Crystal Lake Immediate Care Center, 525 Congress Parkway, Crystal Lake, will be participating in the event. Shots will be available from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Medical experts recommend the flu shot for everyone over the age of 6 months. Flu vaccination is especially important for people with medical disease such as asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease, all of which pose a high-risk for serious flu complications. Pregnant women and caregivers are strongly encouraged to obtain vaccinations to prevent from spreading the virus to others.
