Kane County Hosts Free 'Recycling Extravaganza' Nov. 10

This one is pretty spectacular, because it includes everything from electronics to scrap metal, textiles, wheelchairs, document shredding, latex paint and polystyrene foam. It's all part of America Recycles Day.

Kane County is hosting a free residential recycling and document shredding event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in celebration of America Recycles Day, at 540 S. Randall Road in St. Charles.

The county will be collecting for reuse or recycling:

  • Electronics (everything with a plug on it, except no large “white goods” like fridges or washing machines)
  • Scrap metal and holiday light-strings (collected at the electronics recycling area)
  • Books (any age or condition, hard cover or paperback)
  • Clean Textiles and Shoes (used clothes, linens, towels, hats, purses, belts, paired shoes and stuffed animals). All wearable items go to developing countries to those in need of affordable clothing items. Non-wearable items (stained or torn) are graded and recycled into wiping cloths or for fiber content.
  • Bikes, bike parts, helmets, bike baskets, crutches, wheelchairs, sewing machines
  • Polystyrene Foam #6 (plates, cups, clamshell containers, block Styrofoam, NO peanuts or bubble wrap)
  • Dictionaries, yarn, musical instruments, new or gently used school and office supplies

Confidential Document Destruction: We will have a free document shredding service truck on site for residential use (no businesses please). Bring up to five boxes of sensitive documents containing confidential information. Please do not bring periodicals, or other paper that does not need to be shredded and can go in your household recycling bin. All paper collected will be shredded on site and then taken for recycling.

Latex Paint: Latex paint is non-toxic but difficult to dispose of (you have to dry it out before placing it in your landfill trash), but it can be easily recycled. Earth Paint Collection Systems employees will be collecting latex paint. They will not take oil-based paints. Latex Paint will be the only item that has a recycling fee per container ($1.50/quart, $2.50/gallon, $3.50/2-gallon, $8/5-gallon), payable by the resident by cash or check.

What the county will NOT be collecting:

  • Oil paint or other Household Hazardous Waste will not be accepted at this event.
  • Tires and motor oil will not be accepted at this event.
  • Anything that is not on the list above will not be accepted.
  • Landfill garbage.

Kane County continues to hold its Monthly Electronics and Book Recycling Collection Events at this location on the second Saturday of every month. Contact Jennifer Jarland, Kane County’s Recycling Program Coordinator at recycle@countyofkane.org or 630-208-3841 with any questions.
