Grafton Puts For Sale Sign on Controversial Land

Site purchased for a new building that never materialized.

A prime piece of land, at the center of a contentious court case, owned by is up for sale.

Grafton Township Supervisor Linda Moore said a for sale sign was placed on the property, located on Haligus Road, recently. The township board last fall settled on a $120,000 asking price for the 2.77 acres of land located in Lake in the Hills.

The township purchased the land in February 2009 intending to build a new township office, but those plans were derailed early last year when a McHenry County judge issued a permanent injunction against the plan.

Moore was elected on a platform opposing plans to build a new building and won election in late 2009. In April 2010, township voters approved a resolution to sell the property. Moore sought an injunction and it was granted in May 2010.

Since the injunction means nothing can ever be built on the property, “we could use that money to run the township,” Moore said, adding the township wants to “free up those tax dollars and use them.”

A potential buyer has been asking a lot of questions about the land but Moore could not give further details on a potential sale.

The plan to build a new township office created friction between Moore and the township board to the point Moore filed a lawsuit against the board alleging trustees tried to strip her of her legal duties. A ruled in Moore’s favor in December.

A hearing is set Feb. 24 for clarification on the judge’s decision because some people have questions, Moore said.

As for the relationship between Moore and the township, “we are moving forward,” she said. “I’ve got a lot of good things going on. There hasn’t been negative press. We are moving forward in a more positive direction.”
