Driver Safety Class Offered At Township

Grafton Township is hosting an AARP driver safety class this Thursday and Friday.

Winter is the perfect season to take a refresher course in driving safely.

Grafton Township will host an AARP Driver Safety class from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday and Friday. The class will be held at the township offices, 10109 Vine St., Huntley, according to a Grafton Township press release.

The comprehensive course is designed especially for drivers age 50 and older, but all drivers are welcome to participate. Attendees will learn how to operate their car more safely in “today’s increasingly challenging driving environment,” according to the release.

All participants will complete a thorough review of the Rules of the Road manual, with an emphasis on safety strategies for driving defensively. The instructor also will show class participants how to adjust their driving to compensate for age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.

The course is a two-day program, and attendance for both classes is required. Participants will receive a certificate of completion that, according to Illinois law, entitles a 55-plus-year-old driver to a reduction in auto insurance premiums for three years, the press release states.

Individuals must check with their automobile insurance company to determine the precise discount and proper procedure to obtain it, the press release states.

All ages are welcome to attend the driver safety course. Participants must pre-register for the program, which is open to both AARP members and nonmembers.

Attendees may register by mailing a $14 check, payable to AARP, to Grafton Township Supervisor Linda Moore, P.O. Box 37, Huntley, IL 60142. AARP members receive a $2 discount. More information is available by calling the township office at 1-847-669-3328.

The program is coordinated by Grafton Township. Bickford Senior Living will provide snacks and drinks.
