District 158 Board President Must Resign before Joining McHenry County Board

Board president Mike Skala expected to resign by Dec. 2, the Northwest Herald reports.

District 158 board President Mike Skala had planned to hold onto his current position while serving as a McHenry County board member until the district resolves a lawsuit, but the Illinois Attorney General’s Office says serving on two boards is a conflict, the Northwest Herald reports.

Skala will be sworn in as a county board member serving District 5 on Dec. 2, so he will have to resign from the school board before then, the newspaper reports.

As Patch previously reported, Skala was elected to the McHenry County board Nov. 6 with . Skala was the top vote getter among six candidates for the District 5 County Board seat.

Skala first ran for District 158 school board in 1997 and last won reelection to the board in April 2011. The two year term expires in 2013. "The school district is becoming a leader academically in Fox Valley and the Chicago area," Skala told Patch at the time. "It's exciting to be a part of something that's going really well. I still have a passion to volunteer and serve."

Skala is a graduate of NIU with a degree in Operational Management Information Systems, according to the District 158 website. He runs his own design engineering and hardware distribution business in Huntley.

“I ran for the Board of Education in 1997, originally to make District 158 the best possible place to obtain an educational experience, and that desire is still present today,” Skala states on the District 158 website.

Mike Skala did a terrific job as president of the 158 board. He is a honorable person and wanted to stay on to help with the resolution of a lawsuit. His leadership and dedication to the students and community will be missed in 158.
