District 158 Abates $2.4 Million In Property Taxes

The Northwest Herald reports District 158 abatement will help freeze property tax levy.

Consolidated School District 158 has opted to abate $2.4 million in property taxes for its annual levy and not collect an increase in taxpayer dollars, according to a story in the Northwest Herald.

The abatement allows the district to ask residents for a flat levy, not counting new construction, the story said.

By approving the abatement, the school district prevents next year’s average tax bill from rising by about $189, or 4 percent, said Mark Altmayer, chief financial officer for the district.

Although the district’s levy request of $62 million represents a 1.4 percent increase from the previous year’s extension of $61.2 million, the school district’s abatement keeps the levy request flat for taxpayers, the Northwest Herald article said.
