The McHenry County Sheriffs Office is warning people to be aware of a lottery sweepstake scam that could be arriving in their mail.

While these type of scams are not new, according to the McHenry County Sheriff's office, this one is unique in that a real looking check is sent to the recipient.

While the check looks authentic, the sheriff's office would like everyone to know that it is not. Legitimate lotteries will never ask you to provide bank information or to send them money to cover “taxes," according to the news release.

“You should always be suspicious if you are notified that you are a winner of a sweepstakes or lottery that you did not enter," said Undersheriff Andrew Zinke in a news release.
