Police: Excessive Speed a Factor in Motorcycle, Semi Crash

A Wisconsin man was in critical condition after a motorcycle collided with a semi truck this weekend, according to a McHenry County Sheriff's Office media release.

The accident occurred at 5:18 p.m. on April 19 when a 2011 Freightliner truck-tractor, which was pulling a 53-inch van semi-trailer while east in the 3900 block of Route 12 in Richmond Township, was struck by a 2013 Yamaha motorcycle, according to the news release.

The motorcycle had been westbound on Route 12 when it traveled into the eastbound lane and collided with the semi, according to a preliminary investigation by police.

The driver and sole occupant on the motorcycle, Kyle A. Marriner, was ejected from the motorcycle and was taken by Flight for Life to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, according to the news release.

Marriner, 19, of Burlington, Wis., was listed in critical condition, according to the Sunday press release. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The driver of the semi, Edward L. Lechner, 51, of Watertown, Wis., was the sole occupant of his vehicle. He was treated and released at the scene.

Police said excessive speed by the motorcycle is suspected to have played a factor in the crash. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Route 12 in the area of the traffic crash was also "clearly marked as a no passing zone in both direction," according to the news release. The crash is under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff's Office.
