Huntley Police: Rockford Man Arrested in Car Hijacking

Kane County State's Attorney's office authorizes felony charges against suspect in car hijacking involving a cab driver.

 

A 31-year-old Rockford man is charged with numerous felonies in Thursday’s car hijacking at Huntley Prime Outlet Mall, Huntley police said.

Christopher L. Mackey, of 1306 North Horace Avenue, is charged with vehicular hijacking, a Class 1 felony, robbery, a Class 2 felony and aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony, police said. He was being transported to the Kane County jail.

Mackey was at bond call early Friday.

Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputies took Mackey into custody in Rockford around 8 p.m. Thursday after authorities developed information about his whereabouts following the hijacking in Huntley.

According to reports, a cab driver picked up a man in Hoffman Estates for a ride to Rockford, but the man asked him to stop at the Prime Outlet Mall in Huntley. There, the man attacked the cab driver, stabbed him in the neck then threw him out of the cab and fled, police said. The cab driver had an undisclosed amount of cash in the vehicle.

Huntley police were able to track the cab to Rockford using a GPS and worked with Rockford police to track the offender, now identified by Mackey, reports stated. He was transported to Huntley and interviewed. During the investigation, Huntley police learned the cab driver was stabbed with pens, reports stated.
