UPDATED: Huntley Firefighters Investigating Fatal Fire at Sun City Huntley

A 73-year-old man died in fire, investigation continues.

UPDATED 4:20 P.M. FRIDAY, NOV. 4

A 73-year-old man died at the scene of a Friday morning fire on Oak Grove Drive that also injured a firefighter, Huntley fire officials said.

The man’s identity has not been released. Kane County Coroner Chuck West said the body has not been identified and next of kin has not been reached.

Deputy Chief Ken Kaudle said a firefighter was slightly injured.

Firefighters responded to 12786 Oak Grove Drive about 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4, to a structure fire, Kaudle said. Huntley police were first on the scene and reported there was a victim inside the building. Firefighters immediately began a rescue operation.

A “flashover,” where heat builds up and then combusts, occurred during the rescue effort. Firefighters found the victim at 10:55 a.m. and the fire was under control by 11:08 a.m., Kaudle said.

Firefighters from Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Rutland-Dundee, Woodstock and Crystal Lake fire departments responded to the scene. Carpentersville, Marengo Rescue, South Elgin and Genoa Kingston provided coverage at Huntley fire stations.

The fire started in the kitchen, officials said. Fire damage was estimated at $160,000 to the structure and $80,00 to the contents. Damage also was reported at $10,000 to a neighboring home.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.

The Huntley Fire Protection District and the Kane County Coroner’s Office are investigating a fatal fire that occurred in Sun City Huntley on Friday, Nov. 4.

Authorities could not provide many details but fire officials were expecting to release information later this afternoon.

Kane County Coroner Chuck West said the case is under investigation and the identity of the victim is not being released because family has not been notified yet.

“We are still trying to identify the person,” West said. “We are not releasing anything.”
