Huntley Cops Crack Down on Vehicles Blocking Sidewalks

Chief John Perkins says officers will start giving warnings starting today, Oct. 1, to homeowners whose vehicles block sidewalks.

Huntley police are cracking down on vehicles parked in driveways that block sidewalks, Police Chief John Perkins said.

The department has received complaints from pedestrians and bicyclists about vehicles parking across the sidewalk, Perkins said. Huntley has an ordinance prohibiting parking across public sidewalks so police will begin aggressively enforcing the ordinance starting this month, he said.

Officers will start giving warning tickets, he said. A regular ticket carries a $25 fine. Huntley police have been sending out emails and put information on the village’s website about the ordinance.

Pedestrians, especially parents pushing strollers, find it inconvenient to run across a car blocking the sidewalk, Perkins said. The pedestrian has to either walk on the grass or in the street, which creates an unsafe situation, he said. Bicyclists face the same frustration, he said.

The situation is happening all over town, Perkins said.

Police will work to educate residents about the ordinance and enforce it.

Huntley police are working with people who have no choice but to have vehicles jut out onto the sidewalk, he said. There are situations where families have more than two cars or have large vans for handicapped children, he said.

He said police are trying to find a good solution for everyone.

Perkins will be evaluating the situation and may consider requesting the village board amend Huntley’s overnight parking ordinance to accommodate residents.

How about those of us who have a single garage/driveway and in addition two teen young adult drivers? Is the village going to make arrangements for additional parking??????? I need a response as this is my situation.

How about the police stay in Sun City near the stop signs? I've seen the same lady blow the same stop sign three days in a row? Or check the speed of the people that live on the far side of Del Webb? Those people drive fast!

Deena, you can contact the police department to talk about your situation. The chief said he was going to try to work with residents on this. Let me know how it works out for you at gloria.casas@patch.com.

The reason people are over parked on their driveway is that they can't park in their garage due to all the junk they have in it!! Why not clean them out and donate it all to agencies where people can benefit from it. Many people who live in townhomes have downsized from homes and have nowhere to put all their stuff, so it ends up in the garage WHERE THEIR CARS BELONG!!

Not my case @Stephen Oconnor. My car is in my single car garage and my two adult children both have cars. Having to call the police every night to report a cars plate e is getting old. My daughter already got fined once. This is ridiculous! There are way more important things to monitor. . .I would think.
