Coroner Identifies Victim in Fatal Fire

The Kane County Coroner's Office uses dental records to identify James Horn.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office identified James Horn as the victim in a fatal fire late last week.

The coroner’s office said Wednesday it identified Horn, 73, using dental records. Toxicology samples were drawn during an autopsy Monday and sent to a forensic laboratory for screening.

A kitchen fire started in Horn's home, 12786 Oak Grove Drive, about 10:30 a.m. Nov. 4.  

The home's smoke alarm alerted neighbors who contacted police and firefighters. Huntley police officers were first on the scene and tried to kick in the front door but the smoke and flames kept them back, witnesses said.

Huntley firefighters also did a search and rescue but could not reach the man in time to save him.

Fire damage was estimated at $160,000 to the structure and $80,000 to the contents. Damage also reported to a neighboring home estimated was at $10,000.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office is continuing its investigation.

Horn is survived by two children Christen (Paul DiPerna) and Jay Horn; a grandchild, Gwendolyn DiPerna; two siblings, Ann Chaudoin and Kenneth Horn.

The wake will be held at from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at Conboys Funeral Home, 10501 Cermak, Westchester.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at St. Luke's in River Forest.
