Boy Scout Donates Coats to Kane County Sheriff’s Office

Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez received a donation of over 300 winter coats this week to be given to inmates who are released from the Kane County Adult Justice Center in the winter but do not have a coat to wear. 

Many times people are brought into the jail during the summer but released in the winter and they are ill prepared for the climate they are going into, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

This has been a recognized need at the Adult Justice Center for some time and it was through the work of Ted Spiro, a Geneva Boy Scout working on his Eagle Scout Project, who filled the need.

Spiro is the son of Kane County Sheriffs’ Office Chaplain Peter Spiro.  When the younger Spiro heard of the need his idea for his Eagle Scout project was born. He hand delivered flyers to over 1,500 homes for his “Second Chance Coat Drive”.  The distribution of the flyers let people know of the chance to donate their old coats.

Perez said he is constantly impressed with the community spirit that is shown throughout Kane County.  Ted Spiro’s selfless efforts and the thoughtful donations made by our residents 300, men and women will leave the Adult Justice Center with a warm coat and hopefully a fresh start.
