One of two drivers in a northern Kane County car vs. semi crash on Thursday has died, the Sheriff's Office said.
Martin Baureis, 26, of Johnsburg, Ill., died at Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Sheriff's detectives were notified of the death at about 11 a.m. Friday morning.
Baureis was taken to Condell Medical by the Flight for Life Helicopter after the crash, which occurred at about 10:15 a.m. Thursday. Sheriff's deputies reported to the area of Route 72 east of Big Timber Road in Rutland Township and found the crash scene.
Baureis was driving a Toyota four-door westbound on Route 72 when his vehicle crossed the center line into oncoming traffic, the Sheriff's Office said.
The Toyota collided with a semi-tractor heading eastbound on Route 72. The driver, 47-year-old Michael Fritz of McHenry, tried to avoid the crash but couldn't.
Fritz saw that the Toyota was traveling on Route 72 at a high rate of speed. Crash reconstructionists will attempt to figure out how fast the Toyota was going, said Lt. Pat Gengler, Sheriff's office spokesman.
The speed limit on the stretch of Route 72 where the crash occurred is 55 mph.
The crash remains under investigation.
