Boomers sweep River Hawks out of Schaumburg with 5-4 win
The Schaumburg Boomers earned a 5-4 win over the Rockford Riverhawks in Frontier League action Monday.
The Schaumburg Boomers made sure they’d leave the confines of Boomers Stadium with a clean sweep of the Rockford River Hawks in the 2012 season by earning a 5-4 win over Rockford before 3,366 screaming day campers Monday morning.
Schaumburg, which came into the contest having won the last five meetings against Rockford at home, needed a few late inning heroics to pull out the victory. After Rockford took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run shot from Jet Butler and a 3-0 lead in the fourth with a single tally, Schaumburg came back with two in the fifth on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Mike Valadez to close within a run. The Boomers then added three in the sixth on an RBI single from Chad Mozingo, a run-scoring single from Nick Kuroczko and a bases-loaded walk.
“Our guys didn’t quit playing and that’s what I love about them,” Boomers’ manager Jamie Bennett said. “We got down early in this game and that’s happened several times this season, but we kept pounding away and our bullpen did a great job of keeping us in it.”

Schaumburg pitcher Matt Kuna, who made his first start of the season after Robby Donovan was scratched from the lineup after having an allergic reaction to a bee sting, lasted six innings. He gave up three runs on seven hits, while striking out three and walking three. It was his longest stint of the season after lasting no more than 2 1/3 innings in his previous three appearances.
“In college (Matt) started the season as a closer, but then switched to a starter at the end so he’s had experience doing both and he did well today,” Bennett said. “Starting is nothing foreign to him, but it was a little adjustment and he came out of it pretty solid.”

Rockford threatened to overcome its deficit in the eighth when it loaded the bases, but the Hawks only came up with one run in the frame on a sacrifice fly from Ted Obregon.
Schaumburg improves to 23-13 on the year and they hold a 1.5 game lead in the first half standings of the Frontier League West standings. Rockford falls to 12-23 overall and 3-15 on the road.
