We've built on top of garages: a whole efficiency apartment. We've also built extension additions with bathrooms and full plumbing.

Making the most of the space you have with an addition is a creative and economical approach.

While I still have a little bit of time for my mom to make a choice, I've always envisioned a little ranch cottage with a flower garden path from my back door to her front door.

Maybe a trellis or a pond in between. I see my kids running to greet her. I see family dinners together. Where she is close enough but still has her own space. A rocker on the front porch for her to knit.
